Folks here have experienced a barrage of posts that look like they are WordWeaver and/or Guido, but when I look at the threads themselves and other threads that discuss the barrage, I see claims that these are not being posted by those two. Other posts, which might have some information, have been deleted. Still other posts complain, then apologise for complaining, but do not make clear why. Does anyone have the story? Are we seeing ghosts in the shadows or have various spammers returned? |

Summary: People take message boards too seriously. If you ignore the crazy people on the subway, you'll have a pleasant ride. If you ignore the crazy people on the net, you'll have a nice surf. |

Misfit "discovered" the ruse and Guido finally admitted it. Some of us thought Guido pretending to be WW WAS WW and made comments. Others yelled and screamed at the supposed WW. When it was found out to be truly Guido some of the screaming and yelling was withdrawn, some said that Guido was wrong for perpuating the WW problems and screamed and yelled some more. |

Thanks for the explanations. As an added benefit, my posting of this question in a new thread pushes the others farther down the list (but I really did not know the answer, I wouldn't post just to push other posts down). |

This is the soap opera of SETI 1. Another World 2. As The SETI Turns 3. Days of our SETI 4. The Jerry Springer@SETI Show. I could go on and on, those listed above are popular Soap Operas on U.S. Television. You know its O.K. To Laugh and to Laugh at ourselves, But the Intent of some has ruined it for all. Let’s try again.... I still think all previous threads should be deleted and we start fresh. I still think a moderator is needed for the most nasty people that are out to destroy the board. I am not giving up on this Board. Respectfully, |

From the Rules and Policies section: Liability SETI@home and University of California assume no liability for damage to your computer, loss of data, or any other event or condition that may occur as a result of participating in SETI@home. Timmy, This seems to cover participation in the message boards. In one of those legal twists that American jurisprudence is famous for, it may be that if SETI@home provides a moderator, they may open themselves to greater liability since the task of moderator probably carries with it a responsibility or a duty to protect users from eachother's libelous, obscene and insulting posts. |

That may very well be true. Before the advent of "samaritan laws", there were many successful lawsuits against people who performed CPR and emergency first aid on strangers only to get sued for not being perfect at it. Tragic to think that walking away while someone dies is the safest bet. |

This seems to cover participation in the message boards. Don't forget that we have our own disclaimers in addition to whatever Berkley has. Maybe we should consider writing an "official" SETI forum disclaimer for all threads. Sort of like a Constitutional Convention. As it is right now, each thread may or may not have a disclaimer as the thread initiator sees fit. |

None of these people work for in any capacity or are authorized by the University of California to represent the University in any way shape or form legally ... The self made Legal Mumbo Jumbo the Forum Members put in these Threads would absolve the University of nothing in a court of law, the only Disclaimer that means anything is the one the University puts out on their own and all the others put out by Forum Members are nothing more than a waste of good Thread Space ... |
