Message 1493449 - Posted: 22 Mar 2014, 17:23:15 UTC

I just replaced my old machine with a new Core I7 Windows 8.1 with an nvidia GT640 video card. Boinc is not detecting my GPU (adjustment tab does not show in computing preferences or the activity tab). Work downloaded does not include any cuda or open cl jobs.

How do I get boinc to see the card and assign work to it.

SIV shows the card as GPU 0 and the onbosrd Intel chip as GPU 1.

When you installed BOINC, did you install it as a service (the option that says BOINC will run even when no one is logged in)?

And when you installed your videocard, did you let Windows install the drivers, or did you download and install them from Nvidia? You need the latter drivers, not the ones installed by Windows, as these drivers lack the necessary components.

I don't recall. I usually allow the default settings when installing anything.

Drivers was my first thought. I went to device manager and tried to update driver through windows which said the most current driver was already installed.

Current driver is listed as 9.18.13.3523

the most current driver on Nvidia support is 335.23-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-english-whql

looks like the same release to me. Should I download and install the one on Nvidia support site?

Downloaded and installed driver from Nvidia. Shut down machine and did a cold start. Same story no usable GPU found error 1.

?????

I'm stumped.

3/22/2014 10:32:16 AM | | Data directory: D:\

That might be a problem. You're now dumping all of the BOINC files into the root directory of drive D: or partition D:, something that Windows doesn't like to write to.

Always write to a directory!
So, perhaps best for you to uninstall BOINC now, then clean up the D: directory, make a BOINC directory in it and move all BOINC related files and directories into the BOINC directory, then reinstall BOINC and at the third screen of the installer choose Advanced. Next change the path to the Data directory to D:\BOINC\ and allow to continue to installation.

Then see further if that fixes the problem.

Default directories in the BOINC directory: notices, projects, skin, slots, symbols
Files for the directory: account*.xml, acct_mgr*.xml, all_projects_list.xml, cc_config.xml, client_state.xml, client_state_prev.xml, coproc_info.xml, daily_xfer_history.xml, get_current_version.xml, get_projct_config.xml, global_prefs.xml, global_prefs_override.xml, gui_rpc_auth.cfg, job_log*.xml, lookup*.xml, master*.xml, remote_hosts.cfg, sched*.xml, statistics*.xml, std*.xml and time_stats_log

A very uncomfortable tee-shirt.
There are a couple of tricks to get out of it.
Only use the Nvidia supplied driver (the Windows supplied one has a lot of functionality cut out of it)
And do a CLEAN installation. Nvidia usually hide this under the advanced options nearly invisible button.
Next, turn OFF automatic driver update (I've had Windoze decide to "update" my hand updated driver). This can be a pain to find, but it is normally buried in the depths of the control panel....

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. I noticed the files were unfoldered in the :d drive.

That's a 2 TB WD drive I had on my old machine for folder and backup storage and I used it due to limited space on my :c (a 120GB SSD OS Boot drive).

Thanks again in advance(fingers crossed, knock on wood).

I installed the driver from the Nvidia support site, so I'm going to try ageless' solution 1st, uninstalling BOINC and redoing the install. If that don't do the stew, I'll give your solution a run.

Thanks Rob........

I want to stress that just uninstalling BOINC won't do it, you'll have to gather the BOINC files and directories and put them in an actual folder, before reinstalling. Uninstalling BOINC won't remove these files.

That seems to have done it, log file says there is a GPU

I'll run a few hours to make sure but BOINC seems to be requesting GPU jobs now.

I built this machine specifically to see what kind of crunching I could do with a wide open Core I7 for SAH.

Thanks again for the help.
