Now we have that idiot who runs a country where 66% of the population is starving firing off more missiles (even after China gave him a dressing down earlier this month for test firing a missile in front of a Chinese airliner).

North Korea has test fired 30 missiles into the sea.

NORTH Korea test-fired 30 short-range missiles into the sea on Saturday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, the latest in a series of launches that have provoked criticism from Seoul and Washington.

“North Korea fired off 30 short-range missiles between 4:00am and 6:10am (1900-2110 GMT Friday) this morning from its east coast into the Sea of Japan (East Sea),” said a spokesman for the Joint Chiefs.

“The missiles are estimated to have flown about 60 kilometres (37 miles),” he added.

Personally I think that this world is just breeding far to many idiots these days. :-(

Before he does you mean?

He has an extremely bad habit of eliminating his chiefs of staff, his family and his ex-girlfriends.

Quite correct, there should be an international law banning it.

Get that done, and peace shall follow.
You are quite the optimist, Chris.

As am I at times.

You were not a folk singer back in the 60's, by any chance? LOL.

We were all optimists back then. And yes, I still miss Mary very much.
But don't think twice, it's allright.

I just happen to run on the dark side of the road at times.
There are just so many lyrics in this song that ring true.
Hey, I don't mind.
Don't think twice, it's all right.
I'm a thinkin' and a wondrin' all the way down the road.
I once loved a woman, but a child, I was told.
She gave me a heart, but then wanted my soul.
Don't think twice, it's all right.

Manno a manno, Chris? Love you very much.
You have and continue to be a true friend. Not much more could the kitties ask for. Thank you.

North Korea is at it again, but this time South Korea retaliated.

http://www.news.com.au/world/asia/north-and-south-korea-trade-fire-across-maritime-border/story-fnh81fz8-1226869962318

The two Koreas have traded hundreds of rounds of live artillery fire across their disputed maritime border, forcing South Korean islanders to take shelter a day after the North drove up tensions by threatening a new nuclear test.

The exchange yesterday, triggered by a three-hour North Korean live-fire exercise that dropped shells into South Korean waters, was limited to untargeted shelling into the sea, military officials said.

South Korea’s defence ministry said the North fired some 500 shells during the drill, around 100 of which landed on the south side of the sea boundary.

It seems that that idiot Kim Jong-un wants to provoke a war.

Cheers.

Meh, didn't they drive up the tensions last year around this time as well?

They drive up tensions all the time, I think its more as a show towards North Korean citizens than it is to actually start a war.

Not so much the 'North Korean citizens', in my opinion. More like 'North Korean military leadership'... Them, and some other members of his family. There are those in North Korea that kind of question his... suitability for the position. So, he must do these periodic 'shows of force' in order to silence his critics, as it were.

Seems that Kim Jong-un has been working on another new low.

http://www.news.com.au/world/north-korea-executes-official-with-flamethrower/story-fndir2ev-1226877334272

A NORTH Korean official has reportedly been executed by flamethrower, as part of an apparent purge against supporters of Kim Jong-un’s uncle.

Jang Song-tank was killed by the regime in December after it accused him of corruption and disloyalty. Since then as many as 11 senior party officials have been killed or sent to prison camps, the UK Telegraph said.

The Telegraph cited a report in South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo newspaper saying that O Sang-hon, a deputy minister at the Ministry of Public Security, was “executed by flamethrower.”

No cheers for him.

Geez, after having some executed by putting them on a field and have mortars blast him to pieces and supposedly feeding his uncle to a bunch of hungry dogs, the only way he could get any more like a Bond villain is if he has chairs that can be dumped into a tank full of sharks or something.

Not so much any more. NK is desperate for hard currency; this could be Kim's final days in the Fuhrerbunker. China-Korea Tensions Rise After Failed Venture The only use China has for NK is to keep the US off its boarder. Much like their annexation of Tibet to keep India off their boarder.

I must say after 9/11 the US hardened boarder. This is how the egg thrower got in no doubt.

That made disturbing reading :( Will it make any difference do you think? I mean... they only seem to care about a hairdresser's ad campaign. Sometimes I think the UN needs to be given teeth... sharp pointy ones - though of course, there'll always be someone vetoing them into the steradent...

It has teeth. Its just that with the veto power of the permanent members they can almost never agree to anything.

Also, I doubt sanctions work. Who do you think gets hit hardest by economic and political sanctions? The regime? Or the people living in North Korea? If you really want to help them, you either leave them be and wait until the regime collapses at some point, or you invade the place, arrest and execute everyone who was part of the regime and rebuild the country from the ground up again. But good luck getting China and Russia to agree to that last option.

China - Russia agree?

If China (the only Country with the power to Invade, and Secure North Korea) believes it's in their Essential National Interest, they will do whatever they believe they need to do.

NO Country, under these circumstances, will care what Russia, The UN, or another entity wishes, or Legally allows.

Pretty sure that from a technical point of view the US could also invade and secure North Korea.

That aside, countries want to use the UN because it gives their actions legitimacy. It is possible to ignore the UN and start a war but that has consequences, especially now. Just look how much American diplomatic relations suffered after they ignored the UN. How much of their credibility and legitimacy was instantly gone. A country like China has less of that to begin with and just going to war can come at serious consequences.

Especially if they are going to attack a place that has nuclear bombs. What if their invasion causes them to launch one at Seoul? China would then have that on their hands, and while perhaps most of the world doesn't care if they take out the North Koreans, they will not be so happy if that results in nuclear war.

The US does NOT have the capability of Invading to the Yalu River (N. Korea/China Border), and does not have the needed number of Military Personnel to Secure.

N. Korea launching Nukes? Highly unlikely they have a Weaponized Nuclear Explosive, YET.

Country's Have, and always Will, act in their IMMEDIATE National Self-Interest.

Please stop thinking in Western Terms. Very few, outside of The West, does.

Yes. I have lived, and travelled, outside 'The Western World'.

You do realize they have successfully detonated a nuclear device in a test right? And they do have missiles capable of reaching Seoul and probably also Japan (Though I somewhat doubt those missiles are very reliable).

And while the US may not have enough troops stationed in Korea at the moment to begin a successful invasion of the country, it only takes a few weeks of troop redeployments for them to get enough troops in the region to begin a successful assault.

Finally, it is in China's interest to get the UN involved. International legitimacy for their action only helps them to get a better reputation abroad and that better reputation translates in more political power and say. And again, if China's actions caused the North Koreans to nuke someone, at least they can diffuse some of the blame by saying that their actions were authorized by the security council. It deflects a significant part of the blame and thereby saves their reputation. Your idea of what represents the national self interest is far to limited.

Read my post. I said 'Weaponized'. A 'Nuclear Device' is Not a Weapon. In the 'Old Days' they said a 'Device' had to be 'Delivered by Ox Cart'.

Again, if you had followed the news you would know they successfully detonated a nuke during a test. That means they know how to cause a nuclear explosion. We also know they have missiles that could theoretically reach Japan. All they have to do is attach the nuke to the missile and they have a nuclear missile that could hit an urban area with millions of people living there.

I don't know your military background. But... The Terrain of N. Korea would make it impossible for US Forces to conduct a successful Land Campaign of N. Korea, if the N. Korean Military Forces defend their Country.

Yes... The US can cause Great Damage to N. Korea's Infrastructure and Military, via Air. But a successful Land Invasion and Occupation, no.

The US had almost won the Korean war. The only reason they got pushed back was because the Chinese sided with the Koreans which essentially gave them an almost unlimited supply of soldiers. But, we are 60 years later. The US possess the most advanced military on earth that has been entirely designed around waging a conventional war against another countries military. North Korea will be wiped from the map by an army that in every respect is decades ahead of them.

And face it, North Korea mostly has ancient equipment, an underfed army with morale close to breaking point, its poor as hell and probably lacks enough material to even keep half of their properly maintained. It pretty much lacks all the modern equipment the US army has such as GPS, meaning the US army can coordinate its army with so much more precision. The North Korean airforce also is no match for the vastly better trained and technically superior fighter jets of the US army.

Really, if it wasn't for the Chinese backing North Korea and the fact that they probably have a nuclear missile pointed at Seoul, the US army would have crushed the North Korean army under its boot in a few weeks.

But do tell, why would the North Korean army be able to fight the most advanced army to a standstill when superior armies were swept aside in weeks?

I really do not understand why you impose YOUR, and MY, Idea's of National Self-Interest upon others. Cultural Superiority?

People's, Culture's, History's are very different around the world.

Again, because it is in literally every countries self interest to if they can, get some legitimacy for their actions. Again, look at how the world reacted when the US invaded Iraq. They did not get the legitimacy they wanted, they went ahead, and it damaged US diplomatic relations with a good part of the world. If China invades a country without somehow legitimizing that action, its going to cost them. There will be trade embargos, diplomatic relations will suffer, and it will hurt their economy, and in any further diplomatic conference, the Chinese negotiation position will suffer. Will the Chinese invade a country without trying to gain some legitimization first? Yes, if they perceive the costs of doing that are acceptable and the win is big enough. But in this case we are talking about a conflict that could potentially escalate to a nuclear conflict, the Chinese know that and they know that if they go in and North Korea does end up nuking another countries city, the Chinese will be held responsible because they started the conflict and they escalated it to a nuclear conflict. No country wants to be held responsible for letting a country nuke another country.

Ok, whatever you say.

Oh by the way. The US, after Inchon, basically 'Walked Up' the Korean Peninsular. Would you agree there is a 'Little Difference' in Invading a Well Defended Country.

Note to Korean War Vet's: Yes I know it wasn't a 'True Walk'. It is just my way of explaining the difference between then and now.

"Ancient equipment" does not matter because of The Terrain.

Would you really Order Your Troops Into Combat? Believing the N. Korean Forces will not fight. What if they do? This is 'Armchair Generalship' at its worst.

I fully expect them to fight at first. And I half expect them to break once US fighter bombers start unloading their payloads from distances they cannot even hit. I expect their C3 structure to collapse once the American navy starts shooting cruise missiles from miles away and hit their communication and supply lines. I expect American superior firepower to lay waste to what few frontline units remain in position after that.

And yes, it matters how old their equipment is. Its a lot harder to destroy an M1A2 Abrams tank with anti tank equipment from 50's.

The American army had no problem wiping out the Iraqi's and they used to have one of the biggest and best equipped armies in the world and most certainly in the region. And they were wiped out within a matter of hours the first time and a matter of weeks the second time.
