Message 1491490 - Posted: 19 Mar 2014, 22:25:26 UTC

I recently upgraded my iMac to Mavericks and noticed that the screensaver graphics no longer work for any astropulse entries. the black screensaver background comes up and the graphic says starting graphics but they never start.

Also if I am in the BOINC manager under tasks and hit the show graphics button for the astropulse task nothing happens. Under mountain lion a graphics window would pop open and show the running tasks in graphic mode. Under Mavericks the window does not open.

I am running a mid 2008 IMac with 4 gig memory, Mavericks, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro w/256mb Ram

Thanks,

Roy..

Same problem here. That thread is locked.

Tried the fix and failed miserably. Now I have a text editor window that will copy to my desktop no matter how many times I try to get rid of it. No doubt I broke many things and destroyed code while trying this.

I'm very close to deleting Boinc and dropping my mac into my fishtank.

Sorry it didn't work for you. If you are worried that you messed something up, just drag all of bonic to the trash, delete and download a new version and reinstall. I only did the first message on that thread and it worked for me. The only thing I can think is that you might have missed something? If it doesn't work, there are still options. 1) you can still run bonic, just not as a screensaver. Just change the preference to run all the time. The down side, when you want to use your computer, you will have to manually pause it. As for the graphics, it's a know issue but doesn't affect the work being done. The Graphic is really only eye candy for the user. It's the upper graph in the left side that actually shows what work is being down. The large graphic is just for looking at.... 2) Yes, you can delete it. I would hope that you would not do this. We need all the cruncher we can get. The problem is Macs are not a large group here, so we don't get enough attention to issues that occur. 3) copy the thread or print it out, if you have a local mac guru, take it to them and see if they can help you out. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.

I should hope that even OS X has a process prioritizer that runs all science applications at the lowest level supported by the OS while running all user actions at some medium level above that, negating the need to pause crunching while in use? I leave the crunching on while I use my Windows computer unless I'm doing some heavy gaming. (Not meant to be a smug comment but rather to point out that most OSes these days do in fact have preemptive multitasking with prioritization.)

My main problem with Bonic and Mac OS X is Bonic is constantly trying to access the internet connection to the point of blocking all other functions. Network activity based on preferences, but even then there is will slow down or even stall while doing other things. It's less when I limit it to 75% of processors. Definitely need a cooling pad for my laptop.

Good tip Zalster. I'll do just that. Not sure why my text editor is acting up, or what exactly I butchered in the process.

I won't delete Boinc. I was just extremely frustrated.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.

'the fix' only say (using many words) to make the file executable.
"a text editor window that will copy to my desktop" and "destroyed code" do not make any sense to me ... (how 'chmod' can destroy code??)

It wasn't a tex editor, my bad. It was a hidden .DS_store file. Something that should not have been copying over to my desktop. I removed it.
