Message 1493627 - Posted: 22 Mar 2014, 21:23:16 UTC - in response to Message 1493582.

Its pretty obvious to me that that is part of the issue because it shaped how people interacted with her. It shaped how much people trusted her, and god knows it made a lot of the guys here go all gaga and protective over her. :D

We got a girl cat once and called her Nora. We loved her so much and then we took her to vet and it turned out he was a she. The weird thing was how much that mattered and how upset everyone was even though it was just a cat we were talking about. Nora didn't change, but our attitude to Nora did. He kept his name (because after all he was a cat and its not like they answer to their names anyway) and somehow the name Nora became masculine in our heads.

I called my first cat Susie because I wanted a girl cat. When I was three I thought that's how being a boy or girl anything was decided. I've learnt a lot since then :) including that Susie was a boy. It didn't matter because he was absolutely my best friend and never minded me getting him soggy with tears. Sometimes, in public, my mum called him Soo-Soo, but he was always Susie to me. :)

Gender is so pervasive and it really, really matters. Do you really think I haven't noticed that people talk to me differently depending on whether they think I am male or female? I bet everyone would have spoken a lot differently to Kenzie if they realised they were talking to a guy.

... a good point. I have female friends whose heads apparently disappear when being spoken to by some men. It appears to be related somehow to the size of their bra's. I on the other hand, always have a head when it comes to men. :)

Very few people use their real names...

Making oneself completely identifiable to strangers is fraught with problems. In my case, I might one day post a picture of myself on these boards (but I promise I would warn everyone first:)) but it won't be for awhile. I have spoken openly about my son having autism for example. It means if I become openly identifiable to strangers, so could he. It is for him to decide who he trusts with regards knowing he has autism. I have absolutely no right to expose him unnecessarily. I probably should not have brought the issue up at all, but there was an overwhelming feeling with the boards that the cafe was populated with kind, caring individuals, and that a problem shared wasn't a bad thing to do at all. I think that is still true for the most part, or at least I hope it is.

So yeah, I talk a lot about gender issues on a male dominated forum because I know I'm not preaching to choir and know that these are the people that need to hear it. Suck it up. I'm not planning on dropping it any time soon. :)

Everyone here speaks with passion about the things that matter to them. That's what makes these boards so interesting. Long may they continue. :)

Gender issues are really important and just because I am the only one who is bringing them up it doesn't mean I am "stuck" on them, it means I am the only only one bringing them up.

I agree with you but will not apologize for being borne a man. I call your attention to my message ID 1491218.

Apparently he wasn't getting as many hits so he killed off the older women and came back as a barely legal sweet young thing in need of comfort.

Why would I want you to apoligise for being a man? Its not an either/or situation here.

Remember Fred's words at the end of the very first post in this thread

I am therefore opening the floor to allow you, our SETIzens, an opportunity to openly discuss this situation in a civilized manner. The normal forum rules will apply, and no flame wars, swearing, threats or spam-bombing will be allowed.

This thread is getting perilously close to breaking nearly every one of his rules. Carry on like this and it will be locked and hidden, and some of you may "enjoy" a period in the cooler.

Well at least Daryl/Sam (or whoever else he is) keeps his own picture constant.

I find it hilarious that as long as you all thought he was a pretty girl everything was ok.

Perhaps you all need to stop and think about your expectations of gender and why it should make a difference as to how you treat someone?

Someone should write a case study on this because its fascinating.

Just don't tar us all with the same brush Esme.

There must be a lot of Kenzie in him, wouldn't everyone just want Kenzie back even if she now has a beard??

I would!

Esme, I will admit to treating kenzie differently based on gender issues. I was more frank and open with "her" in pm exchanges, thinking that "she" was a 30-something female, than I surely would have been if I had known that "she" was man about my own age. Still, "she" was an excellent, insightful and supportive friend, especially during a period of time when I was dealing with the terminal illness and eventual death of my brother John. So yes, I want my friend to return... bearded or otherwise.

And I just have to throw this out there... There is an old post of kenzie's in which she references a male friend who was diagnosed with stomach cancer. There is always the possibility that the creator of our kenzie character got some of his ideas from his own life. If this man is himself battling cancer, or watching a close friend battle cancer, then how can ANY of us wish him anything less than peace, friendship and support?

I would certainly grant them that should they only come out and ask.
As I said before, I have buried all hatchets on this matter now.
No hard feelings, just questions.
I think most have come to the same place as I have now.

Always the high road, Angela.

It would be interesting to hear your story, mystery writer. I won't judge you without your explanation, and I realize that you may have suffered your own humiliation over this, even if you brought it on yourself. It may take time to re-gain face. Come back and tell us your real story and why you did it. You owe that to this community (you had a large investment in this place.)

CC

And I would like to read the novel.
Less interesting things than this saga have made their way into movies and books.
Please.
Do continue to entertain us. You have us by the curtains.
Nobody here, I think, wishes you anything but the best.
At least, not myself.
Give it a go, please.

This issue brought to light many discrepancies which has shocked many. However, has it had repercussions behind the scenes?

Why do I think that? Simply because of a fluke! News has occurred which would have brought a thread of mine from the backburner to the front page.

On accessing that thread which is still active btw, noticed that posts at least 197 days old have been deleted not more than 48 hours ago. Nothing untoward were in those posts, so.....

...it would have been more sensible to leave alone as it now brings the integrity of the forums into disrepute as how many more have been rectified on the QT?

As I for one have absolutely no idea what you are talking about could you please explain in plain English, for all SETI members to understand, if not then best say nothing.

I see, well as you brought it up but are not prepared to substantiate your accusations I do not see the point in taking it any further.

I will however record in this thread that you believe either Fred or the moderators are part of a cover up, is that what you are suggesting?

Is this our kenzie? unbelievable. I take back my redemption theory.

I guess I'm forced to remove that auto-friendship-accept generator.
