Two on Flightdeck

Horrible, doors were rebuilt to keep terrorists out, I guess no one thought this could and would happen.. All this takes is one person and everyone else is dead. I'd rather be in a train, than a flying coffin..

Another Truck versus Overpass incident... Obviously these OTR drivers are NOT reading the signs.

A bridge has collapsed on Interstate 35 in Salado (Texas), according to the Bell County sheriff’s office.

Noon update: A semi-truck was driving on Interstate 35 when it struck a beam on an overpass under construction at FM 2484, according to Jodi Wheatley, a spokeswoman for the Waco district of the Texas Department of Transportation.

The beam then fell on to vehicles on Interstate 35 in Salado, about 50 miles north of Austin, she said.

12:20 p.m. update: One person is dead and others are injured after part of an overpass at FM 2484 fell on Interstate 35, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

3:15 p.m. update: Veronica Beyer, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Transportation, said that the beams of the bridge under construction were 14 feet and one-half inch above the surface of Interstate 35.

Three signs were posted in the two miles before the bridge, she said.

Each sign said that the bridge clearance was 13 feet 6 inches.

“We say it’s lower than it actually is,” Beyer said, to provide a margin of safety.

Beyer could not say the height of the truck that hit the bridge as it was traveling north on I-35 on Thursday morning

I still think that a captain should have a "root" password able to open any door in any circumstance. Imagine a hostess fighting a madman.

Phones & Friends are a distraction for teen drivers

It would be interesting to see just how many videos are available of "so-called" mature drivers doing exactly the same thing!

[quote]If flight decks had toilets and thermos flasks them they wouldn't have to leave the area and nobody else would need to enter. But it would cost too much to modify planes and there isn't the space anyway.

The Apollo astronauts managed it without having to "EVA".

Many of the door locks are simple deadbolts, maybe with a locking solenoid. You are talking about a major expense to enable passwords.

Or the route restriction maps.

I drive the Historic Arroyo Seco Parkway (California route 110) most days. Every entrance has a sign no vehicles over 6000 pounds gross weight, with a picture of a small box truck with a slash through it. There is one bridge with a 13'6" clearance sign. It has a few scrape marks, but that isn't the reason for the truck ban, which has been in place at least 50 years. Almost every entrance and exit has a curve so tight it will jackknife a HGV. I've seen that. I've also seen far too many HGV's on that road. Too damn many fools using passenger car GPS!

In which case explain this! How many in the last 12 months? If they don't know their route and they can't read bridge height signs, they shouldn't be behind the wheel in the first place. No wonder Eddie Stobart is so fussy about who they take on.

Another bus ....

That's a question you should be asking of the bosses employing foreigners who do not know the country they're driving in.
Edit: As you're in the UK, watch Fake Britain Series 5 Episode 2 on the BBC's iPlayer. There's a huge wakeup call waiting there for you.

I think the problem is, most drivers and almost everyone else, doesn't know how tall a given truck type is, so the signs aren't really helpful, unless one knows the total height of the truck being driven.

In that case, they can't be called "Professional". most drivers I know & worked/work with, know the limitations of the vehicles they drive.

It wasn't my intention to denigrate foreigners. Unfortunately, have too much experience with them & when objecting to their "discrepancies" I get the "Racist Card" thrown my way.

A true example that occurred 16 days ago...

...attending the funeral service of a friend & with no vehicle spare on hand to drive to the crematorium, I travelled by bus. On asking the driver (there are two bus routes to that area of town, with each covering one half), if he went to the Crematorium...

...his reply...

"I go to bus station, Westwood & Bretton" in pidgin English. I later found out that he's been driving that route for a little over 4 years & he still does not know the areas he covers...

...What does that tell one?

Vic, all UK double decker buses have a sign inside the front of the vehicle, clearly visible to the driver, stating what the height of the vehicle is. Sirius is mainly right in that bus companies employ too many people that simply aren't up to the job. It would be tempting to query the nationalities involved, but that would be seen as very non PC. All I can say is that bus drivers in my part of South London are a veritable United Nations!

Maybe in the UK, but in the USA? I've not seen anything that tells anyone the height of a particular truck, being spelled out on the truck, where anyone can see that displayed.

Again, in that case, the drivers themselves should know the limitations of the vehicles they drive. Are you saying that our standards are much better than those in the US?

Shock, horror :-)

I have seen this on many trucks. Furthermore, Sirius is right. Any professional driver SHOULD know the dimensions of the vehicle he/she is operating, even if it's not spelled out somewhere.

Most truckers that drive for a living know the capabilities & limitations of the vehicle they drive. Many, as seen by our annual "Truckfest" & MATS in the States, take good care of their vehicles & know everything there is to know about the truck.

Unfortunately, & I have come across these types, there are those who just want to drive without any regard for the vehicle they're driving or other road users. It is those that needs to be taken off the road.

Truckfest

MATS

I'm lucky in that I live only 6 miles from the East of England showground where Truckfest is held :-)

Would love to visit a MATS show one day.

Ah yes. Paid by the mile as the crow files. Always pick the shortest route bridge heights be damned. Drive more hours than permitted. It gets you a bigger paycheck.

Oh as to height here in the US, the trailer isn't married to the tractor. The height needs to be on the trailer, not the tractor. Of course flat beds with external loads are another matter.

Maybe slightly off-topic but still a Transportation Safety issue.........

Hampton (Illinois) posts signs asking people to “stop pooping on bike path”
Two new signs have been added along the bike path, saying, “Stop pooping on bike path.” Most think it’s a message for dogs, but actually it’s a message for humans.
