Flight recorder revelations Yes, that is standard procedure on long flights. Typically the most dangerous times during a flight are landing and takeoff. The senior captain is supposed to take a long nap in the middle so he is fresh for the landing. The most disturbing part to me is that the stall warning turned off when the airspeed dropped below a particular value as it was assumed by the aircraft designer that airspeeds that low had to be invalid data. This was one factor completely confusing the pilots in the cockpit. When they pulled back on the stick, the stall warning quit - even though that was deepening the stall. When the pilots pushed the stick forward, the stall warning came on - even though that was the correct action. Another thing that is a problem is that the auto pilot did not change the position of any of the physical controls. The throttle remained at 85% even though the autopilot had cut the throttle to idle. The sticks do not move to reflect the changes that the autopilot was making either. In this accident, having the stall warning at the extremely low airspeed and having the physical throttle lever at idle might have allowed the pilots to realize how to save the aircraft in time to avoid flight into terrain. They really should ban those mobile advertising vehicles. ;-) http://www.news.com.au/world/truck-with-huge-photo-of-breasts-causes-hundreds-of-car-accidents/story-fndir2ev-1227093022050 PICTURE this. You’re driving down a busy Moscow road and suddenly a truck with a giant image of a woman’s boobs appears beside you. Cheers. |

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/10/16/35-injured-5-critical-in-arkansas-train-collision-report-says/ I'm hearing (but not yet convinced) the passenger train stalled due to wet leaves on the rails and rescue engines sent to help it crashed into it, possibly also due to the wet leaves. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/10/16/35-injured-5-critical-in-arkansas-train-collision-report-says/ Ever tried driving on wet leaves on a hill? It is about as bad as driving on a sheet of ice on the same hill. BOINC WIKI |

In the UK we have special leaf cleaning trains that run during the "fall" to steam blast the rail clean of leaves as it is a big problem Here is the south it causes two problems: Loss of adhesion on the wheels and problems on the third rail as the conductor shoe cannot make contact. A few years ago we had the "Wrong kind of leaves" incident. |

I travel regularly to the West Country from London Waterloo on the Exeter train. All this year over 175 miles they have cleared trees and branches and brushwood about 6-8 feet away from the rails on each side of the track. This has been done to try to eliminate trackside fires in the summer and leaf-fall in the Autumn. We will see shortly how effective it has been. I don't know about other stretches of railway line. Philadelphia has a major problem with leaves on streetcar rails and has tried various things to clean them. Methods that come to mind include scrapers and acid washes. (Chicago Transit Authority has sleet scrapers on the 3rd rail shoes on L cars.) Don't forget also the "wrong type of snow" in 1991. Snow That has also happened over here. You have to remember David that when we had British Railways, the network was run for the benefit of the passengers. After the Government sold off the family silver in 1997, the Railways were privatised and now are run for the benefit of the shareholders of the various franchises. . "I wish I had a daughter so I could forbid her to marry a Vogon." Over here, Amtrak has some premium service options that come at a slightly higher expense to the company but also earn much higher revenue. However, Congress keeps harping on them to cut expenses without regard to the higher revenue they reap. Hope she recovers, but another possible Darwin Award? Cyclists "undertaking" large vehicles turning left are putting their lives at risk... Ludgate Circus accident ...the problem with most major cities is cyclists thinking that the Highway Code & the Road Traffic Act only apply to motor vehicles! |
