Just what is the problem with PSV/HGV drivers today?

I'm quite familiar with that stretch of the M5 & never drive over 50mph on certain sections, that is one of them.

A fairly accurate guess is that the coach driver was doing what they normally do on motorways 70mph or more. That is an awkward curve to say the least. I've even seen cars spinoff there.

Southbound crew definitely passed multiple signals, including an absolute STOP at the end of double track, where they were supposed to wait for the northbound to clear the single track.

Jeebers! How in hell did they qualify as drivers?

I don't want to impugn them, but the investigation will probably conclude that they fell asleep. Frighteningly common with the way train crews' work/rest schedules are set up on major US/Canadian railroads. Short lines, yard crews, and passenger crews have more predictable call times.

Even to volunteer at the museum, I'm under FRA Hours of Service rules. Maximum 12 hours on duty, then minimum 8 hours off. I think for the major railroads, it's 10 hours from the time they sign out to the time they sign in again, but included in that time is travel to their home or hotel and back again, plus the crew caller can call 90 minutes before the on-duty time.

This line is one of two predecessors merged into Union Pacific in the region. Most traffic moves one way on one line and the other way on the other line. On this line, only Amtrak (once daily) and a local freight (I think also once daily) move against the current of traffic. One of these trains was the local. (Not sure which.)

Jeebers again! Here it is 12 hours minimum between shifts (well it was in my day, not sure if that has changed - However, I doubt it as the unions would have a field day).

I think the unions would like to see it changed to 12 hours off, but the railroads respond that this would result in individuals working less total time per month, thus getting paid less, and the unions back down again.

Well the difference between the 2 countries equates to 40 hours a month less.

I would much rather have the 40 hours less & still have a regular income than lose my life & stuff the unions!

That how it should be.
However the attitude in all of US business. Its called maximum profit. Get the most out of the worker and to hell what happens to HIM or HER.
Its cheaper to pay the fines when a bad accident happens.

That seems to be what is afflicting the transport industry worldwide.

Makes one wonder in the 21st century why all the safety updates due to accidents when the companies themselves find it cheaper to pay fines.

Won't be long before the glue & wires of the old biplanes will be all that is keeping the transport industry afloat!

Even though I hold full licenses from a motorcycle right up to Class 1 HGV's, I have enjoyed cycling for 45 years & often find it quicker sometimes to do shopping by bike due to traffic congestion.

However, to this day, I feel this should be toughened up on & any cyclist caught should face a very heavy fine rather than receiving a slap on the wrist or ignored by the authorities...

London cyclists collide with 25% of London's guide dogs

Too scared to cycle on the roads? Then get on a damned bus!

They need the guide dog to get to the bus. The cyclists need to get fined for antics like this.

Bus driver smokes drugs at the wheel of a moving bus. :-O

http://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-act/bus-driver-shaun-murphy-smoked-drugs-at-the-wheel-court-hears/story-fnii5s3x-1227039261002

A DRIVER whose passenger bus slammed into a family home was captured on CCTV smoking synthetic cannabis while behind the wheel, a court heard yesterday.

Shaun Murphy “administered” synthetic cannabis 13 times from a green pipe before he crashed his bus into a Glenmore Park home on June 15, Penrith Local Court was told.

The 56-year-old Busways driver was allegedly filmed by the vehicle’s internal CCTV system steering the bus with his elbows and “at times he had no control of the steering wheel at all’’, a police statement of facts said.

How stupid can a person be when knowing of all the cameras installed on the buses over here these days?

Cheers.

You may not have heard the phrase "felony stupid" before, but this is what is applies too.
