Even gasoline spilled upon cold pavement is rather hard to ignite.
How many cars crash without a spark or fire?
Many times the few that are noted.
I did have one car fire.......a fuel line on a '72 Buick ruptured {after market carb, not factory plumbing} and the thing went up in flames seconds after I smelled the petrol.
Luckily for me, I had, and still have, an extinguisher on board, and the damage was very limited. It probably took me more hours to get the extinquishing powder out of the carb than the actual fire damage.

Most liquid hydrocarbons need to be vapourized before they burn. As Donald pointed out, one good way to vapourize them is a high speed crash. The resulting cloud of vapour still needs to come into contact with something very hot (like a really hot exhaust pipe) before it ignites, so vehicle fires resulting from crashes are relatively rare. Most road vehicle fires are electrical in origin, second leading cause is a ruptured fuel line on a running engine (like Mark's example).

It now appears the FedEx tractor was on fire before it collided with the bus.

It now appears the FedEx tractor was on fire before it collided with the bus.

And now the NTSB says there is no physical evidence or other witness confirmation to support that.

Yeah, that report was from the woman who's car was hit just before the bus. Which points up the unreliability of eye-witness reports. Sometimes as we try to remember things that happened quickly, we think we remember things that didn't quite happen that way....

Moronic teenager gets kicked in the head by passing train's driver while taking a selfie too close to the track.

That guy is just so lucky it was only the driver's size ten that hit him - indeed it may have saved his life looking at how close in the boot was.....

2014 doesn't seem to be a good year in that side of the world.

Akin to murder, says Korean President

Does make one wonder on whether or not safety takes precedence over profits!

No need to be sorry Anniet, this is the transportation safety thread.

It seems like a ferry on that side of the world is sinking all the time with massive amounts of life. Profits at the expense of lives. I think you nailed it.

Agreed that the news is depressing these days, but modern life thrives on new information from the North, East, West, & South. At present we are all hearing about the missing Malaysian airliner, and the South Korean ferry disaster on an hourly update, because modern media via the internet is able to do that. 50 years ago the West probably wouldnt have heard about either incident until weeks later, if at all. Someone prangs their car in Sydney, we know about it in London 10 minutes later, simply because we can. I think more things are being reported, not more things happening, but that is maybe a discussion for another thread.

I like to be kept informed too about what's going on in the world of course. It's just all the bad news about crazy f**ked up people that's really making me sick and you hear stories about them EVERYDAY on the news! Bombings, shootings, incest, rape... *sigh* Anyway, back on topic now...

In the old days you would get a report over crackling phone line and if you were lucky you might get an update in the next 24 hours. Nowadays with live feeds every hour, the problem is that reporter might not have anything new to report each time, so the there is tendency to report any rumour going.

Plus they all want to be the first to report something.

What's the old TV news cliche' - if it bleeds, it leads. Shock and scandal and death and destruction attract viewers and readers. What horrible thing happened to somebody else, and thank God not to me.

THIS is transportation safety.

Just try not to be so negative all the time.
You want out of my reality, just opt out of my reality.

Lots of space in this mall...
Or the famous Nazi clanchase scene.
We've thrown a rod............"Is that serious?"

And you don't like the new Bluesmobile?
So, like, fix the freaking cigarette lighter.......

And...I do not associate with any Illinois Nazis.
Of any kind.
Or a few nuns for that matter.
Pity the mother......

Well, as the BB said, let's go.
Oh, my......A hundred miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas, a half a pack of cigs. It's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses. Hit it.

This falls more in the category of stupidity than safety, but it's worth a chuckle.

Another reason why our crossings should return to manned gates...

Lights too dim to see

"An earlier Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) report found the lights, which were tested in a laboratory, were too dim and had output well below the specification for lights of this type."

Too focused on profits maybe?
