This thread is for commentary on transportation safety incidents and is intended for people who don't want to go to Politics (but that means you have to keep politics out of this thread).

I'll start it off with News helicopter crashes in Seattle, 2 dead.

Not always possible I'm afraid for 4 simple reasons: -

A) Safety Concerns
B) Security Concerns
C) Financial Concerns
D) Political Concerns

Also, cannot understand as to why thread no 1 was messed with as it was an excellent thread.

Yes it was.

I know we can't keep politics entirely out of here, but let's try to keep it to a minimum, especially the arguing.

Saw the Seattle crash on the news earlier, anything further on that?

Doesn't seem to be anything substantial. The offices of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are a quarter mile away, for what little that's worth.

Okay, KOMO has identified the people on board. More detailed article.

Train horror in France as cyclist’s body carried 40km before anyone noticed.

THE body of a cyclist hit by one of France’s high-speed TGV trains was embedded into the front of the driver’s carriage and carried 40 kilometres before anyone noticed.

Every time I read stories like that, I'm dumbfounded.

I love cycling. Also in my younger days, enjoyed motorcycling. I hold all licenses from a car up to a 44 ton articulated truck and also driven trains.

Just wondering if he was listening to an mp3 player as I see this constantly every day. If he was then a candidate for a Darwin award!

Does the TGV have level crossings in areas where it goes at its maximum speed? Or would he have to have been hit at "normal" speed?

In the US, there can't be crossings where trains go faster than 110 MPH. (Or, to put that the other way, trains can't go faster than 110 where there are crossings.)

No, but they do have level crossings on the low speed line, and that service runs on both "high speed" and "conventional" tracks, so actual collision may well have been on a conventional section. Unless the cyclist was trespassing on a high speed line (which isn't unknown....)

That's what I figured. But the article does say they found his bike at a crossing. I suppose that's how they know how far he was carried on there.

That's what they're working on, but who's to say that the bike itself wasn't carried for some distance as well.

Cheers.

At that speed wouldnt a body hitting the train at least make a noise? Now I believe that also at that speed just turning you head for a moment might make you miss seeing a person on the track.

The TGV/AVG driving cabs have very good sound insulation, particularly against "below floor level" noises. Also it sounds as if it was a low speed impact, so there wouldn't be much noise. And (and this bit concerns me most) during station departure and low speed running the driver is very much "head down" watching the signalling display, which is constantly giving him target, limit and real speed info. This is because in-cab not line side signalling is employed on the vast majority of TGV/AVG operated routes in France.

At 200 MPH, lineside signals would be useless.

But at low speed, in locations where there are crossing and low platforms in-cab signalling is probably more dangerous than line-side...

The switchover either way could be a killer.

How about a HUD?
