Anybody watching this series on the history channel? And we think we have political problems today. :) It's a good thing I suppose that our Scandinavian neighbors today pretty much like to keep to themselves.

And the idea of taking a broad sword to people who post stupid comments on the Internet has a certain appeal.

Yes, barbarian raiders didn't have to observe such niceties as free speech, property rights, and other rules of civil society. Anyone raises a hand or voice against you, whack! they're fertilizer.

And yes, some of my ancestors were Danish pillagers.

I have been watching that show. The vikings were not the only ones who pillaged but they do get blamed for inventing it.
The Persians, Rome, Wiiliam the Conquerer when he put down the rebellion by Morcar, Set his army on a ramapge known as the Harrowing of the North. Which took the lives of 100,000 people.

The sad part pillaging still happens.

Indeed! In fact it has been hypothesized that if it wasn't for viking descendants settling in the area we now call the Ukraine, and their resilience and development into what became the earliest Cossacks, Europe would have fallen like a house of cards to the Tartar hordes. I do stand open to correction... bit misty on the facts but having lurched about in them for a moment - that's what I've dredged up. :)

If I'm right... imagine how different everything would be now...

Genghis and his descendants never got to Japan either, something to do with the wind or something ? Oh dear... see what you've made me go and do now... :)

I only watched the show when it first aired because I thought it might be a history of the vikings. I think its just TV fiction,Based loosely on the facts. But it got me hooked on watching it.

Back in the 80's I read a book called A History Of the Vikings ( revised edition 1984 ) by Gwyn Jones. A very good read.
