Thanks Mike and Zappy :) Been trying to tell myself that - but it's MUCH more convincing when others say it! :)

Don't worry Annie, both my youngest are going to uni and neither of them smoke (though they do like a drink or 2). ;-)

Cheers.

Thanks Wiggo :)

He got a whole itinerary of "fresher's week activities" for this past week - and they all involved pubs and night clubs - so he attended none of them (because he thought people would think he was weird if he just had coke cola). And on registration day - he was the only one who went to the canteen during the ten minute break - whilst everyone else headed for the bike sheds for a cigarette.

Maybe I should hand him over to his sister's tender loving care :) Three hours in her company one afternoon last week and I found I'd shared a bottle of wine and "tried" some of "this really yummy liqueur mum" :) All I can say is wine and disaronnyoniomy... erm disaronninums... something brown in a very attractive bottle... make it impossible to walk straight for some considerable time after combining them.

He's going to be fine! :) I know he is. He has a lovely way about him and someone will take him under their wing I know they will :)

I have never smoked, drank or used drugs but I did have friends and the only thing they did was have a drink from time to time, I never saw them out of control. I have been to bars with other and there is nothing wrong with ordering something soft except you pay an arm and a leg for it.

The one thing about being sober in a bar is you find that you are the most intelligent person in the room as the night goes on. I have never acquired a taste for alcohol and in the very few time I have been ask why I don't drink, that is my response. Tell you son that there is nothing wrong with not drinking and there are advantages to always being in control of yourself.

Annie, It a parents nightmare to see your kids growup. You wonder if you taught them well enough to survive the hard cruel world.
And 99% of the time we did. But they need us for that 1% they didnt. I know damn well you will be there for that just incase he needs me.
Ive thanked my parents parents for being there. And my kids have thanked me for being there. Thats what parents are here for.

More lovely and wise words :) Thankyou!

I have and will continue to do so. He has tried alcohol... and thought it was possibly the most disgusting taste he'd ever encountered :)))))) Suppose there might be one out there he hasn't tried yet and likes - but he is hyper-sensitive to things like smell, touch, sight, sound... and obviously taste too :)

That is so true!! My daughter was a doddle :) Instinctive awareness of who it is safe to trust and who it is not :) My son is far too trusting but he is learning! This might sound bizarre - but allowing him to watch reality television shows (like Big Brother) when he was growing up, gave him opportunities to observe the darker side of how people behave to one another without the threat of having to learn it for himself first hand. Never thought I would ever find myself in the position of trying to teach someone how to tell a lie though... and fail :)

BTW Annie, what subject(s) is he studying?

Illustration and Visual Communication Media. He sees in pictures. It was - until he was four and a half - the only way he communicated - with absolutely amazingly detailed drawings :) The written elements of the degree will be the biggest challenge for him though - but he will be getting to learn to use the latest computer graphics and animation software available - which is brilliant!! Still waiting to hear whether he'll have access to mentoring and study support - but the university is pushing for it. So is one of his tutors - who - weirdly - taught my son in his first year at college and knows him well and was really pleased to learn he's going to have him in his tutor group this year!! So it is ALL good - and he will find his niche socially too. :)

Thanks for all the words of support and encouragement :) I'm feeling much more confident now :)

Don't believe a word of it anniet,
there are monsters out there just waiting
for us to turn our kids lose so the
creatures can feed. I was lucky, I
made my kids so bad tasting that all
we had to worry about was what errors
they would make for them self's.

It still went by too quickly.
