No, but the Tobacco industry has in many cases employed the same people responsible for the climate skeptic movement. And they most certainly use similar tactics when trying to convince the public and the politicians that the anti smoking people got it wrong when they say smoking kills. ID: 1488364 · |

Skeptical Science - How do we know more CO2 is causing warming? @Chris, A blog you might enjoy. Why climate change can never be ‘someone else’s problem’ a quick quote. Another irony was the international consistency of climate change contrarian arguments; I might as well have been reading the usual suspects in the Guardian forums for all the difference I could detect. Lessons From the Senate's Climate Change All-nighter I'm amazed noone has commented on that! Or is all that just far far too far-out painfully embarrassing for everyone in the 'great' USA? A few snippets from there for those too lazy to look: When my colleagues and I finished our all-nighter on the Senate floor on Tuesday morning, we had spoken for more than 14 hours to draw attention to the threat posed by climate change. As we had hoped, we engaged the American people in our efforts to wake up the Congress to the threat of climate change. Thirty-one Democratic and Independent senators participated in the event, including Majority Leader Harry Reid and his leadership team and senators from every region of the country. More than 145,000 people signed petitions to show support for urgent action on climate change... What struck me while listening to the speeches of my colleagues were four extremely important points: First, climate change is real and the deniers are losing ground... ... virtual certainty that the planet is warming due mainly to human activities which have increased the amount of carbon pollution in our air. The level of scientific certainty on man-made climate change is about the same as the consensus among top scientists that cigarettes are deadly. An overwhelming majority of the American public recognizes that climate change is real and is happening now, and there is strong support for action to address this growing threat. ... The special interests may have erected what my colleague, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), calls a special interest "barricade of lies" around the Capitol. But we are taking that barricade down, piece by piece. Second, every state in the U.S. is already experiencing the effects of climate change... ... Climate change is real, and it is happening all around us -- from coast to coast. Third, the solutions to climate change are good for our economy and good for our country. The U.S. has proven you can continue to protect the environment and grow the economy... Fourth, we cannot wait for countries like China to lead. All you have to do is look at China to see what happens to your country when you throw the environment under the bus... ...For many years, our nation has shown great leadership on many important global issues, and we cannot wait for other countries like China to act on carbon pollution and climate change. What we do here in the United States has impacts around the world. When our nation reduces its carbon pollution, it makes a difference... We must take action now to avoid the worst impacts posed by dangerous climate change... So, how to break down those polluting 'self-interest' political barricades sooner rather than expensively too late? Eritrea: Hail storm dumps metre of ice on capital A freak rain storm has dumped as much as 1m (3ft) of hail on Asmara, capital of Eritrea (AFRICA), in what appears to be the heaviest rainfall ever recorded there. This week's storm lasted just 90 minutes, but afterwards parts of the city were completely blocked by ice... Bit unusual for that much, but not unusual at this time of year, Spring or in Autumn for there to be very heavy hail storms. In the past 1950's when cars were not common, at the side of the road there were covered parking places. You do have to realise that Asmara is 7,500 ft up. Think Johannesburg, for the type of weather it has. It's where I lived as a schoolboy. At first sign of rain we would dive into the nearest house or school building, just in case. ID: 1489180 · |

95% of our Great Lakes frozen; in places up to 4 feet thick. Iceboating on the Hudson River probably 3000 miles from the North Pole. A good portion of my shrubs, herbs and bushes wiped out or partially dead from the cold and lingering icy weather this late winter/early Spring here in Tennessee.Please don't post that it's obvious that we are warming.
