My life expectancy is 16.79 years, that is something to be sorry about.

So, make the most of it. What does that have to do weather you donate? OBTW I'm peopably older than you.

My comment on my life expectancy was about the chances of SETI finding something in my lifetime. From what I just learned they won't even start looking by then. As for donating money I do through The National Science Foundation with my taxes.

That assumes SETI gets enough funding through the NSF. You are also donating to a dozen other science projects that you may or may not agree with. Donating directly allows you to have a direct impact on something you believe in.

I will not donate until AP WU hoarders like this are stopped.

Donations should be something you believe in, not negotiation tools to exert force or withhold for ransom.

Wow! How's that even possible? That said; I agree with this:

Donations should be something you believe in, not negotiation tools to exert force or withhold for ransom.

You should donate because you want to. A donation is ment for future work; not as salary for completed tasks.

Maybe we need a thread to discuss the revival of the GPUUG fundraising. I became aware of it a few weeks ago when I noticed Mr. Kevvy's signature. I checked out the website and saw Mr. Kevvy's generous matching offer and saw that the donation I made some time ago to the servers drive has been redirected to the new receiver, based on the current needs of the project. I currently have a recurring monthly donation of general purpose funds to SETI through the University's site, but will toss in some more to this drive in a few weeks.

Fundraising does not seem to have gone well the past couple of years, and we need to increase interest and participation.

The SAH team is awaiting the specs of the new NVidia offerings (Titan Black, 790, etc.) that should be out this month so may change the requirement, so I thought I'd see if we could get the total down a bit on my own in the interim as >$4K is a lot for a weekend.

However, once they've finalized, then we'll have a fundraiser weekend as we did with the hard drives/case and sticky threads, put it on the main page and so forth. And yes, I'll be matching... I earmarked $3K for this so it's well within the budget (hope that doesn't change!)

That's fantastic... thanks! :^)

You donated through the general donation to SETI@Home... if you wanted it to go to the SERENDIP campaign please advise (only matching that one) but it's all excellent. Transfers from GPUUG to SAH are done at the end of the month, so you should get your star first week of April. Please let me know if you don't, and yes, it's tax deductible of course.

A little OT, but I really like the idea of tax deductible donations. We have that in Norway to, but only for a few, gouvernment choosen, norwegian associations. No foreign donations, or donations that's not on their list, are tax deductible.

Well, most countries don't consider donations to foreign universities tax-deductible. I'm very fortunate (or maybe I should say that SETI@Home is... heh) that I live in one that does. Was ecstatic when I discovered this accidentally and it motivated me to donate a lot more; previously was just enough to keep the star on.

I would check with your tax authority and you may end up surprised... I certainly was!

You may put the donation in any SETI fund you wish. As for a tax deduction I no longer itemize so it doesn't apply to me; one should check with a tax adviser but that is a topic for another universe.

Someone also donated $25.00 anonymously through GPUUG to the campaign, just the right amount and at the right time that I would think that it was my matching donation being manually added... it wasn't.

So, thank you muchly to whoever who you are and here's my matching donation to cover it:
