just got an HP 2000 laptop w/ Windows 8, that has a Radeon HD6310 Discrete Class GPU. the graphics won't work, altho the BOINC program will. i have tweaked and re-tweaked everything in preferences! i even updated the GPU driver. i don't see the 6300 series GPUs listed under supported ATI/ATH GPUs in the GPU list, altho i see other 6000 series GPUs. is this the problem? that this particular GPU is not supported? (BOINC runs better on my 11 year old Dell Dimension 4600 XP computer, w/ an ancient Nvidea GPU in it than this thing!) |

the HP specs on this 2000 notebook say that it had what i previously stated: a Radeon HD 6310, BUT the device manager of the actual notebook says it has a Radeon HD 7340. in either case it is also not on the supported GPU list. other AMD 7000 series GPUs, but not this one. so the difference that makes no difference is no difference. if it is not supported, that must be why the seti@home graphics won't work? is this guess correct? |

Matthias, Go to bonic and on the pulldown menu, click on view and change it to advance view. Once you do this, the appearance will change as will the pull downs. You should now see another pulldown further to the right that says advance. Click on this pulldown tab and scroll to Event log and click there. This should cause a pop up screen to appear. On this new pop up screen, scroll up to the every beginning of the screen. click and hold and highlight the first 20 or so lines of that screen. Then right click and copy all of this and then post it here so we can see what it says. |

i even updated the GPU driver. Which driver, where from? If not downloaded from AMD's support site, chances are high it doesn't support OpenCL or OpenGL. Edit: I see that you already run a driver from AMD and that your GPU is being recognized by BOINC, AND that it has work appointed to it. i don't see the 6300 series GPUs listed under supported ATI/ATH GPUs in the GPU list Which GPU list are you talking about? Can you give a link please? if it is not supported, that must be why the seti@home graphics won't work? is this guess correct? The GPU applications at Seti do not come with a graphics application, thus they do not show the Seti graphics when they run. Only the CPU applications have graphics. This is done, because the feeling is that running intricate 3D graphics on the same hardware that does the science calculations can interfere with each other, and cause errors. Errors in the graphics isn't such a problem, while errors in the calculations are. |

regarding the GPU it is actually a Radeon HD 7340, not what i previously stated (a 6310 i think). in any case it is not on the list either. i have tried running the program off the CPU, w/ no better results. the graphics will not work. they will work fine on my 11 year old Dell, w/ and ancient NVIDEA card in it just fine however. from the looks of this this system does have open CL. 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | cc_config.xml not found - using defaults 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | Starting BOINC client version 7.2.39 for windows_x86_64 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | Libraries: libcurl/7.25.0 OpenSSL/1.0.1 zlib/1.2.6 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | Running under account Matthias 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | CAL: ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 6200/6300/7200/7300 series (Wrestler) (CAL version 1.4.1741, 384MB, 351MB available, 172 GFLOPS peak) 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 6200/6300/7200/7300 series (Wrestler) (driver version 1124.2 (VM), device version OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (1124.2), 384MB, 351MB available, 172 GFLOPS peak) 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | OpenCL CPU: AMD E2-2000 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics (OpenCL driver vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., driver version 1124.2 (sse2), device version OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (1124.2)) 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | Host name: lugnuts 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | Processor: 2 AuthenticAMD AMD E2-2000 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics [Family 20 Model 2 Stepping 0] 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 htt pni ssse3 cx16 popcnt syscall nx lm svm sse4a ibs skinit wdt page1gb rdtscp 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | OS: Microsoft Windows 8: Core x64 Edition, (06.02.9200.00) 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | Memory: 3.60 GB physical, 4.22 GB virtual 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | Disk: 443.03 GB total, 397.97 GB free 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | Local time is UTC -5 hours 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | SETI@home | URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID 7217396; resource share 100 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | SETI@home | General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 22-Feb-2014 18:43:33) 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | SETI@home | Host location: none 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | SETI@home | General prefs: using your defaults 2/23/2014 2:45:25 PM | | Reading preferences override file |

Keeping it simple, only one of your systems shows as having a GPU, the one with the HD7340. Thus the other system, presumably the one with the Nvidia card, doesn't have a SETI@Home capable card in it, hence the graphics on that system and not on the other. that is about as clear as mud. so the old computer is running off the CPU? and the new system has an incompatible GPU. then why won't it run off the CPU just like the old one? i tried setting it for that, and nothing. it has twice the power, and all it does is complain off & on the processor usage is too high, no matter what i set it at. and i shut off about 30 unneeded services at that. i am not a computer and GPU wizard. all of this could be cleared up in a 20 minute telephone call! Alright already, moderator. i have no experience w/ this or any other bloody forums, other than one on the prog band, King Crimson (that i never understood the machinations of either), which i have made a best friend for the past 12 years by exchanging e-mails. they didn't care. i don't facebook, skype, text, or tweet either. i e-mail and talk on the phone, to anyone in the country w/ unlimited minutes for $11.50 a month! if i could call somebody there, and not waste my time writing those multilingual volunteers (who do not answer), i would have solved this problem by now. i frankly don't care if a SETI person knows my e-mail. and i don't see why you should either. you are the most inaccessible people on earth. the NSA is easier to get a hold of! and the Space Sciences Lab does NOT answer their damn phone. i have half a mind to shut down seti@home, and forget about your entire program after 12 thankless years. i am not a new member; i just opened a new acct because you have one of the most inscrutable websites & programs i have ever seen! and i happen to be a bright guy. get on the ball and out of the damn cave you are all in. Are you worried that the 3-D graphics are not showing up on the screensaver? As Ageless stated above, you will not have a 3-D graphic if you are using the graphic card for crunching as you don't want to do both at the same time, i.e. crunch and render the 3-d graphs. It's one or the other. The main question is, will it crunch the data. It currently shows you have 3 work units to do, let them run and lets see if they complete correctly or not. Rob is correct in saying that your older system will crunch on the CPU and it will have a 3-D graphic screensaver as the Graphic card in that one will not being used or can't be used. As for why the CPU as not being used in your new computer, Seti will test your system to see what works best with your hardware, usually it starts with the fastest processor first, ie, your graphic cards.. It will send a series of work units to see how fast or which type your system will handle. After it test the GPUs then it sends the CPUs..from what I remember. Currently, only multibeams are being sent out, there are problems with the servers so no astropulse or few are going out. Set all preferences to default for now, and lets see what gets processed and what the results are. I understand your frustrations. Just hang on for a bit OK? |

OK - quite simple: Stop changing your mind about what your problem is and you will get answers, shout and scream and nobody will listen to you. However: You have been told not to expect the SETI at home screen saver to run when processing on your GPU - because there isn't a GPU compatible screen saver built into the application. If you want to see the screen saver then you have to disable GPU processing of SETI@Home, and only allow processing on the CPU. This can be done on the website using the options that are under the "Account/preferences" tab, or locally by using the BOINC Manager (the gui interface that most users see is the "simple" interface, with or without the screensaver or other graphics) advanced view and setting the processing options there. There is a default setting for the amount of processor use above which SETI won't run - the default value is 20% which on many systems is far too low, increase this to say 50% and see if things improve (this setting is found in the the BOINC manager advanced view, tools/computer settings menu) Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Matthias PMed me, saying he meant the Top GPU list link, where it says: The following lists show the most productive GPU models on different platforms. It doesn't mean that the GPU you have isn't supported, or that it doesn't do the (OpenGL) graphics, it just shows the top 10 most productive GPU brands and models at the Seti project. all of this could be cleared up in a 20 minute telephone call! Not if you do not understand what we are talking about, or you read only between the lines we write, instead of the actual lines we write. get on the ball and out of the damn cave you are all in. Yeah, hurling abuse like that is what will make me try to teach you things. Think again. You be reasonable, I'll be reasonable. You want to be abusive, I walk out of this thread, and will not return. |

there is a Pink Floyd line on Animals, my favorite by them, that begins something like: "i have to admit i'm a little bit confused..." i will leave out the rest for fear of it sounding like abuse: "i'm sorry, it is hitting on the head lessons in here." i have two college degrees, one in electronics, before the advent of this stuff, and i understand String Theory and The Higgs Boson, better than the sudden influx of this info that i now kno i need to understand. SORRY, i have been at this for 3 days and i am a raw nerve ending. (i also lacerated my little finger while washing the dishes on a broken glass two days ago and cannot write, but i can type w/ it raised.) apparently i have a lot to learn. i was a set & forget kind of guy. looked at the site about once every two months; checked out what Seth Soshtak was doing and so forth... i have set the prefs both ways. several times for the AMD GPU, and for the CPU, at various processor rates. neither works the screen saver, and neither does a lot of # crunching. It is slower than molasses in January. so i switched back to CPU. i even turned the screen saver OFF, and it has not budged beyond 21% done w/ the task. i now have the processor set for 70%. if i set it any higher than that the computer stops calculating in starts & stops. i have the old Dell set for 100%, and it is doing 3 times the crunching, AND the screen saver, without kvetching. pretty good for a computer probably built in 2002. the Dell is 2.4 Gigs, and the HP is supposedly a dual 1.75. (even the Belarc Advisor seems to confirm this.) it should not be complaining, after i shut off over two dozen unneeded services. what is it doing in its spare time? calculating finite absolutes? i am not obsessed w/ the screen saver, but at least it tells you when and where the data came from and your credits. and i already tried setting it to defaults for a day, and it did worse. maybe this thing is like the two Magic Chef microwaves i got and returned to Fingerhut, that were "rated" at 900 & 1100 watts, that would not pop pop-corn, or warm up a cup of coffee in less than 6 minutes. obviously they were lying about the magnatron specs. they were detritus in a fancy package. i sent them back, and got this. perhaps this is a trend. i am done for the moment trying to figure this out. if you guys can, i applaud you. i am too exasperated, unless there is some concrete suggestion as to what to do. then i will return to it w/ vigor. i just don't comprehend why i can have one or the other, but not both (when in reality i can only have the slo crunching), when the old Dell, w/ the old NVIDEA card is working like gangbusters. perseverance furthers. thanks for putting up w/ me! |

Sorry couldn't help. I know there are some issues with the AMD ATI cards. You have to be really careful with which drivers it has. I have a HP with an old CPU dual core at 2.3 Ghz but it takes over 6 hours for 1 mulitbeam work unit, and more than a day for any astropulses. I had update the driver as well and it got some work for the graphics but each of those turned out as an error and failed so I stopped using the graphic card. I went back and found a thread that addresses the AMD ATI cards with links to drivers. Here is the thread address. Maybe you can find some answers there http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=73953&postid=1471061 |

You can only merge one SETI-Classic account with one BOINC account. There's instructions on the home page for SETI@home Classic participants that directs you to click on a link and type in the email address you used when you signed up. It is also important to note that your old SETI Classic workunits will not be converted to BOINC Credits, rather they will be displayed on your account as a separate stat. |

SHOW ME THE MONEY! (Jerry McGuire) I GOT IT TO ACTUALLY WORK! i have about 8 e-mail addresses in the past 15 years. that's just me. i can remember about the last 4 of them, and they were in quick succession. i did not write them all down, and certainly not the passwords. and i was sharing a computer w/ another woman for 5 years. i suppose i should have when it comes to this type of stuff. so i doubt i will ever recover much! I had my old NVIDIA WU fail and have had it replaced with an alternative GPU. This is not recognised by a current Astropulse WU - I am getting a "GPU missing" message. The WU is hung at 99.099% of course! What is we best way to deal with this work unit now? Abort? Thanks. Rogerp http://www.rogerparsons.info/ E pur si muove - And yet it does move (Galileo Galilei) |
