Hard to imagine TSMC getting 16nm working at high yields when they can't get 20nm to work.
I guess it would all depend of just how much work is required to redesign for 16nm, and just how good TSMCs 16nm yields actually are.

The GTX980 & GTX970 have arrived.

A rough summary- Nvidia have re-taken the lead for the single fastest GPU. It also uses almost 100W less than the model it replaces. Keep in mind it is still being manufactured on the old 28nM node- it was designed for 20nM. Also keep in mind future improved drivers will bring further performance gains.

I just wandering why they skip the 800 series.

Video card models can best be described as confusing.
There are already lots of 800 series GPUs about- all for mobile devices. The equivalent desktop GPUs are the GTX700 series.
Rumours are that Nvidia has skipped the GTX800 series for desktops & gone straight to 900 series to reduce the confusion, somewhat.

There are already lots of 800 series GPUs about- all for mobile devices. The equivalent desktop GPUs are the GTX700 series.
Rumours are that Nvidia has skipped the GTX800 series for desktops & gone straight to 900 series to reduce the confusion, somewhat.

And they've got some numbers available to recycle, now they're phasing out support for the 9xxx series :P

To support the new 9xx cards, NVidia have released a new driver - 344.11

This driver no longer supports the oldest generations of CUDA hardware. From the release information:

Legacy Support for Tesla architecture GPUs
Beginning with Release 343, the NVIDIA graphics drivers no longer support the Tesla generation of NVIDIA GPUs. These products are identified in the section Supported NVIDIA Desktop Products and Supported NVIDIA Notebook Products.

The Release 340 drivers will continue to support these products until April 1, 2016, and the NVIDIA support team will continue to address driver issues for these products in driver branches up to and including Release 340. However, future driver enhancements and optimizations in driver releases after Release 340 will not support these products.

The following is a summary of legacy products beginning with Release 343 drivers:
• GeForce 8 & 9 Series Desktop Products
• GeForce 100/200/300 Series Desktop Products
• GeForce 7/8/9 Series Notebook Products

I think maybe to cause a better separation between different segments. Like Radeon R3, R5, R9 series GPUs. Perhaps they will keep some as 700 series. Then introduce new mid range GPU as 800 series.

Prevailing theory that I have read is it's because of OEMs. They don't really care about the underlying technology, they just need a model number increase with every year. Hence NV gave them the 800M series. Post-700 desktop GPUs are only being released now, at the same time as 900M series for mobile. So to make things consistent between desktop and mobile GPU names, NV sticks to 900 series naming for all new GPUs at this time.

The naming scheme just confuses me anyway. 700 series included 'big' Kepler, renamed Kepler GPUs from 600 series and first-generation Maxwell.

the TDP for the GeForce GTX 980 with 4GB is just 165 watts.

Another article say 195W. Either way, that's still pretty good reduction
