Hi. I am an old Seti@Home entusiast. A few months ago i have stoped to run the program, because i have no time for it, but today i decided to activate my computers. But...some problems where pop up again!!!
I have some Servers (windows server 2008 64 bits)that where running an old Boinc Software because i cant install latest version. How can i install latest versions on domain controller? Thank you.

This is a long-standing, but low priority, restriction - see trac [trac]#652[/trac]

There's no real need to move to a newer BOINC, unless you want to run a GPU application - and do you really want to do that on a domain controller? You'd also need to leave an administrative user logged in to the console (so the GPU driver could run in user mode) - and that would be frowned on as a security risk in every server room I've worked in.

It's only the BOINC installer which has a problem on a domain controller - the files themselves should run as normal, though they won't have the full sandbox security that a normal installation would setup. What you could do - and this probably requires access to a workstation that isn't currently running BOINC - is to run the BOINC installer on a less secure machine, but with the /a administrative switch. That unpacks all BOINC's working files.

Then, copy the files you need to the DC. The installer also sets up some file location references in the Registry (even with the /a switch, which is another bug - [trac]#847[/trac] - that's why you shouldn't do it on a machine already running BOINC). Find

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup]

and copy the keys to the DC - the critical ones are

"INSTALLDIR" (where BOINC's own executable files are located)
"DATADIR" (where project executables and data will be stored and run from)

I hope that's enough to get you started, if you want to experiment.

Richard,
Thank you.
There's no real need to move to a newer BOINC, and i dont want to run a GPU application...on DC...of course. I just try to use the new software, but if you say thats no need...what else can i say? A message on Boinc tells that some jobs could not run if an old version runs...I am focus on that...and no other else. Thank you.

I'm still using BOINC v5.10.45 on my Domain Controllers. I have no problems with SETI, Rosetta or Einstein.

I think I read somewhere that virtual machine apps should run in service mode installs too. If OP is interested in projects that have VM apps that would be a reason to go with BOINC v7.
