And what do the Europeans do?

I repeatedly asked Guy to explain why I'm a racist and he repeatedly ignored my request for clarification. And there you barge in and start yelling about Europeans not understanding AMERICAN sarcasm, as if sarcasm is something very different in the United States.

I'm not talking about cultural distinctions, this is fundamentally about the meaning of words.

Sarcasm
ˈsɑːkaz(ə)m/
noun
The use of irony to mock or convey contempt.

Misrepresent
ˌmɪsrɛprɪˈzɛnt/
verb
Give a false or misleading account of the nature of.

What Guy was doing with his white/right malarkey was the latter, not the former.

So if i interpret this correctly.

X takes a stand on political issue de jour.
Y disagrees with this stand.
Y twists X's words in order that Y may call X a racist (regardless of X's actual meaning).
This forces X to drop their stand on PIDJ in order to defend themselves against racism.
Y dismisses anything X says "because X is a racist".
PIDJ gets forgotten about.

That's still not sarcasm.

Agreed. Note also that references to Saul Alinsky's Rules perform the same function. Simply exchange racism for Rules for Radicals, and the discussion takes the same turn. It makes open discussion quite difficult, which is, I think, Guy's point, but I don't see why engaging in the tactic is helpful at all except to point out how any topic can be derailed.

Hello everyone :) How are you all!? Well I hope :)

I must say I have been reading this thread with considerable bafflement for some time... and if this is a sort of drapes/curtain issue then it might be helpful if we look at how the word right is used elsewhere in the world (by that I mean in places other than the USA)

"Right"

(adjective): in accordance with what is good, proper, or just. In conformity with fact, reason, truth, or some standard or principle.

(noun): a moral, ethical, or legal principle considered as an underlying cause of truth, justice, morality, or ethics.

(adverb): in a straight or direct line; straight; directly

Once combined with other words or prepositions and suffixes - it can take on a multitude of other meanings - none of which are "white".

Then of course there's "right wing":
members of a conservative or reactionary political party, or those opposing extensive political reform; that part of a political or social organization advocating a conservative or reactionary position.

Is it permissable for those of us outside the USA to continue to use the word as we have for hundreds of years? Or will we need to choose another word so that we can avoid all future misunderstandings of this nature?

Also... should we assume that when we see the word being used by an American that what they actually mean is "white"? (I'm not comfortable jumping to such conclusions which is why I thought I should check.)

PS: As a left hander, I would like to express my objectivity on all issues regarding the word "right" :)

Ah, not to worry Anniet, just remember it has been proven that we left-handers are amongst the brainiest 10% of the world's population. So we can look down at all those "righters" and their idiotic attempts to get their way :-)

You understand it, Simonator. Its just about lesson number one in USA politics.

'racist' is but one of many variations on the theme.

Others include (but are not limited to) 'sexist', 'elitist', 'socialist', 'communist'.. the list goes on and on..

Calling someone a *-ist when it is not warranted is a way of changing the subject off of one you are afraid you might lose onto one where the other person WILL lose. Even if it is successfully refuted, the damage to reputation from JUST the Charge of *-ist is VERY difficult to recover from.

It is the way politics works over here (and I have my suspicions about it being the case over there as well). Standard tactics, par for the course.

Who cares about Brainiest.

Since the some of the Brainiest Attended the 'Best' Universities, Highest Educated, etc., supported measures which led to Murdering 10's of Million Children, IE: Marxism, Stalinism, Maoism, and other Horrors...

Why should anyone really value their OPINION, over those with, as you imply, an Inferior Brain?

NOTE: I am a Member of Mensa (Top 2% IQ). My Mother was a Member and Writer for Mensa.

NOTE #2: My IQ would actually allow me to join TOPS (Top One Percent Society).

Therefore, according to you: You must defer to my opinions in this Board.

Have a good day. :) :) :)

I must say it is a pleasant change to see the "poor underdog" win a significant election in the US. Just proves that not all the votes are bought....

It was a primary election where only registered Republican can vote. That is a heavily Republican area but they still have to win the national election.

Immigration "reform" is dead in the water for now. Cantor was in favor of amnesty for illegals and that's what got him thrown out of office. This has more to do with Republicans being shocked and awed than "We the People" caring what happens in one congressional district.
