Is their a new email virus out masquerading as different types of
legal proceedings? I find I have a legal claim has been awarded to me
in Virginia and I have been evicted in Chicago. I'm nowhere near those
areas and when I tried to download the zip files on a Linux machine
Hotmail refuses to do it because they contain an unknown virus. Who
would have thought Hotmail would be that protecting of my interests?

Maybe it's me, but I would never had downloaded any of these!
I don't even view the images in such spam mail. No matter what machine I'm running! And I'm running one of the most vulnerable machines out there. Windows...

Good luck collecting because all you'll collect is more spam, and more headaches.

There are new viruses that are only attracted to goats.

I'm aware of those, and stay away from those as well.

Are you aware of the "Fruit Bat" ones? They are particularly dangerous!

I have had all of them and survived. I am a very tough Fruitbat.

There is malware that is embedded in ads -- be cautious.

Hence my trying to look at them on a Linux machine.
You can't report them to the appropriate parties if you
can't down load them and take a look at them.

If it was legit, it'd be sent by registered mail. ;-)

Cheers.

If it supposedly comes from a bank or other institution, they normally have specific "spam e-mail" address that you can forward the e-mail to, all the banks in the UK do as does the Bank of America. I know because I have forwarded many e-mails to various banks and companies over the years.

I have given up recently as it seems to make no difference to the number you get. Having had several e-mail address over the years I probably get 20-30 a week. And no they are not new, virus loaded attachments have been around for a while now.

I have a Paypal account, but anything I get addressing issues is Spam. I forward it to them and the address it. Issues get solved. So some are on the ball. Or at least for me, as I am a trusted reporter.

I get a lot of emails claiming to be from AT&T saying I need to update or validate or whatever to my account. Most of them are obviously fake just by their bad grammar. Recently, I had one that looked pretty legitimate, with proper details and such in it, but I still didn't trust it.

Then I heard independently that Yahoo email had been compromised. AT&T's web email interface is through Yahoo, so I went into my account and changed the passwords on all my addresses. One of them had to be reset because it was saying the old password I was entering was wrong. It could be that it was compromised, or it could be I had a different password on it than I thought I did. Anyway, it's straightened out now.

On Sunday, I got a couple of spam tweets. I tweeted back to the friend and he said he'd already changed his password. (Which amounts to the most activity I've had on Twitter in years.)

Thanks for the answers. I'm cognizant of past viral approaches.
What was new with these were that they were posted masquerading as legit email from legitimate legal offices. My post was twofold. To see if others had information not known to me an to provide a bit of a heads up to others.

As nothing new has been forthcoming, I'll ask the mods to lock the thread
and let everyone return to more important matters. ;)
