who needs another linux's, when there is a Slackware - oldest, simplest, and closest to old, good unix-thinking-way ( not microsoft \ redhat "shut up, we know better, what you want!") :D

slackware 14.1 have 3.10.17 kernel.
historically slackware use only tested, proven soft, as so, you cannot find latest soft version on slackware.

also about differences in distro - there are many.
as for example, in redhat (fedora?) you cannot enter simple password for user or root.
there are system 5 vs bsd like init system.
configuration files in different places, GUI-based configuration systems, and textfiles based, and so on....

Ya, no problem. Just trying to keep it simple for new people starting out in Linux.

https://www.kernel.org is down right now, but ya, latest stable is always changing.

And entering a simple password for root in Fedora is not a problem. It says it's weak, but hit enter again and it'll accept it. It's just telling you it's weak.

I was just looking over my chicken stratchings (idiomatic expression for poorly written notes) and I need to do another linux install to verify before I post the procedure to get Boinc/SAH running on Fedora 20. I'm waiting on a $20 case to assemble another PC with an E7200 and then I'll verify my notes and then post them if anybody is interested.

All those different Linux distros will make for an interesting comparison! :-)

https://www.kernel.org at the moment is listing for the kernels:
mainline: 3.14-rc1 2014-02-03
stable: 3.13.1 2014-01-29
stable: 3.12.9 2014-01-25
stable: 3.11.10 [EOL] 2013-11-29
longterm: 3.10.28 2014-01-25

Depending on your choice of distro, you will get either the latest "longterm" or latest "stable" kernel, and usually with some special option to allow you to try the very latest up-to-the-minute kernel. Gentoo Linux seem to work to some sort of "whatever latest stable kernel that is stable with no major updates for about a month", for I guess a sort of 'proven' stable :-)

(Also on Gentoo, you can select for the latest mainline kernel version.)

I'll be trying the recently released Mageia 4 Linux, so I can add my install instructions to that...

I am using SuSE Linux 12.3 on my laptop and Virtual Box 4.3.6 to run Test4Theory@home. On my SUN WS I have installed SuSE 13.1 and Virtual Box 4.3.6, OK. But since the latest version of Test4Theory@home needs a 7.x.yy BOINC client to run it, I downloaded from a SuSE repository BOINC 7.2.38 which works fine with all BOINC projects, except Test4Theory@home. The latter insists in saying that Virtual Box is not installed. Instead, it is running Solaris 11.1 as a VIrtual Machine and I am now trying to install on top of it a second tier Virtual Machine with Ubuntu 13.10, which resembles much a smartphone build. But you never can tell with Linux. I had started with Slackware, then went to Linux Universe, Corel Linux and, finally, SuSE Linux.

good to hear about simple passwords on fedora. some time ago i encountered CentOS ( not remember version), and in that i cannot enter simple passw - every time ir says "it is simple password, choose another". id be very bothering for me.
slackware warn you about simple pass too, but you can enter the same pass twice, and it accept it.

btw, i also use mandriva from 7.1 times or so on up to mandriva 2007 - i use it on my desktops, but at the end that distro get that buggy, and user undriendly - i think, even worse than MS products -i abandon use it, and choose slackware on my desktops too. very good and simple distro. i start my path in linux with slackware 4.0 around a 2000 or so on...

... every time ir says "it is simple password, choose another". id be very bothering for me...

Then, rather than use a human-cryptic (difficult for humans) "password", instead use a human friendly (but difficult-for-computers cryptic) "passphrase"?...

As expertly explained by Randall:

XKCD: Password Strength

Also, never use the exact same passphrase anywhere else...

In my IT role, I enforce the use of passphrases... The more amusing or deliberately stupid (stupid associations psychology), the better! Passwords never work well enough for 'real' (non-IT tech) people.
