The ball-end seems worn. Is that from hand contact?

Nope.

The ball end is not worn as the tool pictured is new. It is shiny because this part of the tool is not painted/oxydized and or the mill scale has been removed when the ball end was shaped.

More hints: using the tool will cause (cosmetic) surface wear at the ball end, along the top of the long section and on both sides of the short section.

Is it used to separate something?

Still cold.

In a pinch anything can be used as a pry-bar but that is not the intended purpose of this object. I guess it could make a decent firepoker too but again, not designed for that.
