Not really. Biomarkers aren't heat signals, they are some gases in the atmosphere of the exoplanet that (some) scientists think indicate the presence of life (oxygen, ozone, etc.). Biomarkers are detected by spectrography, and they are very difficult to see (very faint). They require big space telescopes (like JWST or bigger) or really good ground telescopes/spectrographs (E-ELT/CODEX).

Heat can be detected more easily and can indicate a technological civilization, instead of life (a Dyson sphere and the like).

Thanks, Lynn and Batter Up! I joined this project recently, but I'm interested in SETI since some years ago.

Cheers

ok I will start by saying Im not very sharp on the matters of the known universe! My question is this, if light reflects strangely (bending) through dark matter, do sound (signal)waves act the same??? If so, are our signals out into deep space distorted?

The signals we send out are radio waves, not sound waves. Sound will only transmit through a medium like air or water. And yes radio waves would be affected the same way light waves are.

BTW, I'm now reading "Contact". It's a very interesting reading, but I don't understand why religion is so pervasive in the book. It's interesting the different methods by which the messages are embedded in the radio signal and how The Machine construction resembles ITER or LHC construction, with different parts manufactured by different countries and transported to the site, in a process taking years or decades.

Welcome to the boards SETIcomp:) Gravity also has a huge effect on the electromagnetic spectrum. Then the Einstein Cross and gravitational lensing comes to mind.

If you lived in the southeastern USA you would understand the understand the influence of the "bible belt" on politics and life in general. I spent a lot of time during my childhood in a children's hospital in Greenville, S.C. Many of the hospital staff firmly believed that man had no business in space and that God would punish us for sending rockets to the moon. That was in the early 1960s and sometimes I don't think attitudes have changed much over the years within certain segments of the population.
