Message 1467280 - Posted: 22 Jan 2014, 13:47:19 UTC

Hi, I have noticed that I have about 25-30 work units/tasks which were sent to my account about 3 months ago. They are about to expire in next 2 days. On daily basis I am getting new tasks to process and all new are being processed as a priority when old tasks are “sitting there” - in progress items tab. Any idea?

Are these tasks from SETI@home only, or are the tasks that are downloading from Asteriods@home?

[Edit] After checking the due dates of Asteroids@home, it appears BOINC thinks your computer is not powered on long enough to reach the deadlines, thus it is processing those tasks as "high priority" to avoid missing a deadline. If your computer is powered on long enough, BOINC will eventually work on the SETI workunits as "high priority" to avoid missing those deadlines. If your computer is not powered on long enough to reach either set of deadlines, BOINC will automatically adjust it's workfetch the next round so that it doesn't overfill it's cache where it won't be able to reach deadlines assigned.

I am getting both SETI@home & Asteroids@home but the "sitting" ones are SETI@home v7 v7.00 (cuda50) only. My PC running 24/7

When I look at the computers in your account, a CUDA-capable GPU is not showing, which would explain why those workunits are not being worked on.

Have you recently uninstalled and re-installed or upgraded BOINC? Or did you remove your nVidia GPU? Can you post the first 30 lines of your BOINC Event Log?

Yes, I have recently upgraded BOINC, let's say 8-11 days ago

Did you install BOINC as a system service? If so, BOINC is no longer able to use your GPU, which would explain why all the CUDA tasks aren't crunching and why BOINC isn't showing a GPU for your computer in your account. The first 30 lines of your BOINC Event Log will confirm this.

If my suspicion is correct, you'll need to uninstall BOINC and re-install it, but this time do not install it as a system service.

That's not the first 30 lines. :-( That would be the last X number of lines. Also, the messages from the Event Log can be copied and pasted. No need for a screen shot.

My suspicion was correct. The 5th line down it reads "running as a daemon", which means it is running as a system service and cannot use the GPU that way. All the lines that follow complain about a missing "co-processor", which in this case is your GPU.

You'll have to uninstall BOINC, which is non-destructive, meaning that it will leave all preferences and workunits on your hard drive. Then you'll want to re-install BOINC but do not install as a system service. That should allow BOINC to see your GPU again, and it should start working on those CUDA workunits right away.

Thanx, seems to be working now. I can see NVidia in the logs now

Excellent. Hopefully there's enough time between now and the deadlines for your GPU to finish them on time. :-)

Apropos, next time someone asks for so many lines of the log, there is no need to make a screen shot of the Event Log. You can just select which lines you want, then click the "Copy selected" button, and then Paste that into an answer window here. Much easier than having to resize and upload images.
