I use tightVNC, it´s free and fast but not easy to use as logmein anyway works fine if you do GPU crunching without crashing your video driver. Teamviewer is another fine option and it´s very similar to Logmein. Just don´t use the windows RDP if you do GPU crunch.

I was just going to start a thread on this very subject. Looks like I will have to take a look at Teamviewer.

I loved LogMeIn and really would not mind paying for it but it is just too expensive with the 5 computers I run and I really hate teaser rates.

I was dissatisfied with logmein and switched to teamviewer several months ago. For me, it works much better. Using the program works very well and there's also a web interface I can use at work where I can't install anything.

For those having Windows Pro or like and not Windows MS Home there is.
It is called Remote Desktop Client and can be found here: %windir%\system32\mstsc.exe
You also need to configure your client to accept remote connections.

Not to be used if you are crunching on you GPU as it replaces the video driver with one of it's own whilst you are logged in and can cause problems.

I have been using TeamViewer for 4 or 5 years now and have never had a problem that I could not solve. If they stop the free personal use I'll be really bummed out.

Open Teamviewer on the remote machine. (ie. the machine you want to connect to)

Click on "Connection" in the top bar, then "Setup unattended access".

This will allow you to specify a set password

I did have a problem with Teamviewer last week. One of my computers apparently restarted spontaneously (may have been a power bump) and I couldn't get into it via Teamviewer to restart something. I thought Teamviewer was supposed to start itself in the Windows startup process for just that eventuality.

I just switched from LogMeIn to Teamviewer on 12 assorted PCs and laptops, it works a treat. It adaptively changed the detail levels for slower links too. Also the file transfer utility on the top menu is great.

I used the "Setup for unattended access..." option and they stay accessible after a reboot.

I even managed to install Teamviewer via Logmein remotely, then uninstalled LogMeIn and then reconnected via Teamviewer.

One of my bigger crunchers lives in a shed in the garden due to heat and noise and I access that via a USB 3G Three dongle. It seems a much crisper response than before.

Seems like a good product and free too !

Chris, if you were used to the Logmein web console, the Teamviewer Web Management Console will feel very similar.

I have added my 9 machines and so far no problems, though I have yet to try a remote access. I will try on Friday and see how it goes.

There is of course a mobile "App" which I find quite useful.

The only annoying habit of Teamviewer is that if you use it "free for personal use," when you disconnect it puts up a box on both computers (local and remote) reminding you of that and "suggesting" that you make a donation. On the local, you can just click the x on the whole program and that box will go away with the rest of it. On the remote, it will still be there the next time you connect and the first thing you have to do is close it. No big deal.

So I tried it out from the 60+ clubs computers which are connected to a slow wireless network.

I have to say it was very good and as I believe David mentioned they have a web interface that means you don't even have to install it.

It was fairly quick even to my PC that is connected by wireless at home.
So all in all "So far so good"

If anyone is interested, someone in a group I'm in that's completely unrelated to Boinc developed a quick script to kill TeamViewer's Thank You splash. He set it as a scheduled task to run every 10 minutes. It may not be useful to most people, but certain members of that group have their remote computers on public display and don't want the splash showing all the time.

If anyone wants it, I'll see if I can post it here, or the link to it. (Maybe not the link, I think it's in a Yahoo group's files.)
