Ah that explains that then. Thanks Sten. Just have to stick to 10 a day instead of the usual 400 :-)

Well, I don't even have a facebook account.....:-)
Will never get one either. I belong to the more and more rare part of humanity that refuses facebook, twitter, and other so called social networks. Message boards is enough for me.

A man after my own heart. I dont belong to any of that social network crap either. All though the daugters and grands kids put the pressure on to join one. They claim, Thats how you can keep up with what we do. I say well use the damn telephone, OR heaven forbib E-mail me Or even text me.
I might be 62 but I can text.
@Sten- I can remeber when farmers around where I grew up plowed those fields and grew crops. Now days they have good size trees on them. Or are a housing developement.:(

... The reason we don't hear about it is the reporters for MSM have Windows boxes on their desk, not *nix boxes. Ergo *nix doesn't matter.

Or it could be that with over 50 years of development and experience and the widespread use of *nix running high value infrastructure, it could be all a question of "better by design"?...

But that is for another thread.

One thing I have been reminded of recently in this day and age where users have no idea of how their car engine works or for what might be "under the hood", they really are easy prey to be victim to some powerful Marketing...

I've just had the example of one user who was utterly convinced that everything he saw on his desktop screen was somehow all "Microsoft Exchange", just like on TV. He was completely disbelieving that we have no Microsoft servers at all, none whatsoever in any of our server rooms.

And yet it all works, and works well. Even though he has no idea of the software is that paints pretty pictures and hieroglyphs on his screen every day.

(And no, we are not Google!)

IT is what you make it...

ps: Quite amusing in some ways. But also very sad for how people are such victims to Marketing and put their complete trust in 'strange voodoo'...

Yep, all those "weird" witch doctors...

Kubuntu/Ubuntu/Mandrake/Fedora/Knoppix/SuSe/Red Hat(Thought all witch doctors wore Black Hats?)...

...not forgetting all the smaller islands with their witch doctors not wanting to be part of a bigger clan.

So... What does this little ditty say about the caliber behind those "MSCE" qualifications?...

Five-year-old passes Microsoft exam

A boy from Coventry has become the youngest computer specialist in the world.

Ayan Qureshi is now a Microsoft Certified Professional after passing the tech giant's exam when he was just five years old...

Interesting

"Sian John, a security strategist at Symantec, said: "It looks like it comes from a Western organisation. It's the level of skill and expertise, the length of time over which it was developed.""

hmm, wonder what nation that was?

Based on the sophistication of the threat and the substantial investment it would require, it's hard not to agree with Symantec that it appears to be nation state espionage tool. Symantec's charting of the infections by country also tells a tale that is, at the very least, atypical.

Anti-malware is now available to Mac's from Google with Santa.

GOOGLE HAS RELEASED an open source anti-malware suite for Mac OS X.

Known as Santa, (because it knows which binaries are naughty and which are nice), the source code is available on Github to tinker with to your heart's content, or just download and use.

The software was developed as an in-house solution for the company's fleet of Macs, and is now being offered to the wider Mac community.

This kid is definitely one to keep your eyes on as he grows up. May as well give him everything he wants since he will most likely be able to do whatever he wishes in the computer community.

In the latest desktop/laptop OS market share stats Win7 is still the big winner gaining 56.41% of the total market.

Even those horrible Win 8/8.1 OS's have made it up to 18.65% now.

XP is now finally on a big slide, down to just 13.57%.

But still, M$ OS's dominates 91.46% of this market.

Apple's OS's hold steady at 7.13% (they should be well and truly use to their "7%" tag).

The big hit was again Linux, which saw its market share in this area drop again for the 3rd consecutive month, down to just 1.25% penetration (from a lofty 1.76% months ago).

Cheers.

Add to that:

Wikipedia: Linux Market share and uptake

... The Linux market is growing rapidly, and the revenue of servers, desktops, and packaged software running Linux was expected to exceed $35.7 billion by 2008. Analysts and proponents attribute the relative success of Linux to its security, reliability, low cost, and freedom from vendor lock-in....

Linux Journal: Linux Market Share

... I think the main reason that Linux has not penetrated the desktop market more than it has is because people tend to stick with what they are used to. So, I guess I’ll just have to get used to being depressed, because people are what they are, and learning a new OS is just is not that high on most folks’ “things to do” list.

Tom's Hardware: Linux Now Has "Double" the Market Share of Windows

If you consider NetApplications' data set, then Linux owns only about 1 percent of the desktop OS market and Windows has almost 92 percent. But if you consider all computing platforms, including mobile, than Windows has only 20 percent and Linux has 42 percent...

And very depressingly, Linux has near 100% of the top 500 supercomputer market share. Linux also runs most of the internet and internet infrastructure including home modem/routers.

(And yes, that really is depressing! WHY is there nothing better than Linux for the extremes of supercomputers and embedded devices?!)

I see Martin that you missed the "desktop/laptop OS market share"...

There is an awful lot more to IT than just the old desktop...

And even there that is being overhauled by mobile devices and the cloud and even Google with their Chromebooks.

I think that we can all agree that your one world of Microsoft is rather good at Marketing and proprietary lock-in...
