Is this another example of the continuing example of how Marketing is overruling good sense in "IT" and the users/consumers be damned?...

Why I decided to finally give up on Google

... and finally I have decided to give up on most of the services Google provides. Following are some of them...

... When I had started taking Interaction Design a bit seriously, GMail seemed a bit flawed to me in terms of user interactions. I strongly believe its way to overfeatured. Google is doing a great job of providing a lot of services but in order to do that, it is losing the basic purpose which is to send and receive emails...

... Though, the Mail App Google ships with the Android has IMAP/POP support but the gut feeling says my data is still monitored. Very similar goes for other applications say News and Weather which is currently showing me more and more bollywood crap...

And woe betide you for any out-of-the-ordinary web searches for how/what the Marketing Monitoring then mislabels you for your (and their) 'interests'...

Needing 5.8 gig of storage is ridiculous though, what the hell are they installing on there?

Obviously that was wrong as I only have 2.5 Gb free on my 4S and it installed fine.

The download was 895mb, which was expanded, but then after install all temporary files were removed and I have exactly the same free space on both my iPad and iPhone as I had before.

There is a lot of mis-information around plus I suspect people with less that 895mb free space tried to update over Wi-Fi. I wonder if most people even know how much free space they have?

The only difference I've found with it was under iOS7 my capacity was 13.2gb now under iOS8 it's 12.8gb. With both, had 8gb free.

Here is a good reminder for how you do not have control over your own "i-Devices":

Apple releases U2 album removal tool

Apple has released a tool to remove U2's new album from its customers' iTunes accounts six days after giving away the music for free.

Some users had complained about the fact that Songs of Innocence had automatically been downloaded to their devices without their permission.

It had not been immediately obvious to many of the account holders how to delete the tracks...

Note that the same goes for any device from any vendor for any data where that device is automatically updated with proprietary updates. You are vulnerable or victim to anything being changed on the device, including what you might consider to be 'your' own data...

So what else is there?...

Or have most users already rolled over to die?...

Can't see how that happened. It certainly didn't happen to me. I had to manually download it as I like U2.

The way to go?...

Death, drones and driverless cars: how Google wants to control our lives

Google seems to be reaching out of the internet and into every corner of the world. So what exactly does it want – and can it really be good for us?...

Google may face $6bn EU anti-trust fine

Google’s anti-trust row with the European commission could turn into a case bigger than the one that cost Microsoft more than €2.2bn (£1.7bn)...

... “Microsoft was investigated [by the EC] for 16 years, which is four times as much as the Google investigation has taken, and there are more problems with Google than there were with Microsoft,” Almunia told MEPs...

... Google controls more than 90% of the online search market in Europe...

(OK, so what with all the U2 invasion, why not instead some Beetles nostalgia? :-P )

No one is forced to use Google those who do use it because it works.

Exactly, and I've yet to find a better search engine (let alone 1 that even comes close).

Cheers.

And I like Chrome as a browser. The only downside is that they know what I look at, as does every other browser.

I just have a simple stupid cell phone and that is all I want. No internet, just a means to contact or be contacted. I have no use for any device with an "I" in front of the name nor will I ever store any data on the cloud. I have a few hundred images stored in photobucket so I can share them with my friends. But they are just the images with no long descriptions or tags.

I can hardly believe the advances in storage devices. It doesn't seem that long ago when I thought storing 1.2meg on a 3.5" floppy was amazing. Now I have a 32gig stick memory I use to watch movies I have downloaded on my digital TV.

Well, if people do this...

..what more can one expect?

Even the most recent smartphones are not designed to be put in pockets where they are going to be under the most chassis strain
So where exactly are they designed to be put?
Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

Shirt pockets, jacket pockets or handbags if that's one's inclination, but trouser pockets is asking for trouble.

As Distributed Computing shows, technology does have many advantages, not only for companies, but individuals as well. Being a Left-hander, Word Processors saved me as my handwriting is atrocious :-)

The following report, as had the previous ones over the past few weeks leaves me cold! Over the past 40 odd years, I've been an avid amateur photographer & have taken countless photos, some brilliant, others dismal. I have some in my collection that are personal & intimate (no nudity, sorry guys). Are they on the cloud or any social media, like hell they are!

They reside in my negatives folders with the photos themselves(or slides) in their respective folders (no horrible photo albums where they stick to the page). Now we have digital cameras, so technology has to enter the equation.

All digital personal content, whether they be photos docs etc are stored on a separate hard drive in a caddy. That caddy is powered down at all times until it is needed. As an extra precaution, I use a little program called "Secret Folder" which "hides" any folder one cares to hide & they will not show up on the computer in use.

So ...

3rd batch of photos leaked online

WTH were they doing online in the first place?
Deleting them from a computer and/or one's online account, does not guarantee they are gone!

So ...

Sorry ladies, you have only yourselves and/or your partners to blame!

That personal and/or intimate? Keep them offline!

Oops

Oh dear

Hmm, iTunes keeps telling me that an update to 8.0.2 is available - would I like to download & install, download only or cancel?

Guess which button I click on :-)

Update

Surrey woman's 6 month ordeal

"To those considering posting explicit images without consent, Emma said: "Don't do it. Don't participate in the violation of other people, and don't perpetuate the embarrassment."

WTH? Really? I have some lovely (fully clothed) photos to carry with me when away from home.

I cannot understand why both parties have to hold explicit images of each other! What is wrong with having the real deal or holding those images in your head?
