I finally got BOINC to run after days of receiving MD5 checksum errors downloading better_banner.jpg (Windows client, but this issue could affect BOINC on any platform.)

The problem was caused by the fact that my ISP has server-side web acceleration (BoostWeb) and it was "optimizing" the JPEG into something that looked the same but failed the checksum test. I asked my ISP for a dialup phone number that would bypass the web acceleration, and BOINC has worked fine ever since.
