I`ve a little doubt...why always after project maintenance or after receiving new tasks the SETI@home screensaver data analysis panel doesn't show any graphic? it seems like data isn't processed only shows a flat line... We are not Alone... |

What you are seeing has no correlation to the project maintenance. Many workunits spend their first few minutes calculating the gaussion fit before the processing of the workunit begins, and as such there is no graphic to display. |

Every SETI@home v7 task is approximately 108 seconds worth of recording from space. From there, the length of time it takes to crunch a task can vary greatly depending on architecture. For example, those tasks that take 5 hours and 20 minutes on a CPU could take as little as 30 minutes on a GPU. That said, I think what you were asking is what makes one task longer than another. Generally the amount of terrestrial noise vs. actual background noise in space can have an effect on the amount of time it takes to crunch a task. Some tasks that are recorded on a Very High Angle Range can have lots of terrestrial noise, therefore most of the task is blanked out, taking only seconds to crunch. Whereas a task that is recorded on a Very Low Angle Range tend to have less terrestrial noise and thus can take longer to sift through it all. Otherwise, if you're asking about AstroPulse tasks versus SETI@home v7 tasks; think of AstroPulse as searching for broadband signals from ET and SETI@home searching for narrowband signals. AstroPulse take longer as the tasks are longer than 108 seconds. |

Great explanation bro!!...really interesting..that's why we always must ask!! I mean in order to get clear all doubts no matter how insignificant it could be!!! I really appreciate your help. We are not Alone... |

SETI@home does not offer the ability to listen to the signals. That question, too, has been asked many times. The sounds of space sound like static, or like tuning your radio between stations. Most people would get tired of it and turn it off, thus there's no reason to waste time and effort into programming something that most people are going to turn off. I know I'd turn it off. |
