ASUS X551CA-HCL1201L Laptop, Internet Security Software, Sleeve, Mouse & Flash Drive Package $200

Key features: 15.6" HD display; Intel® Celeron® processor; 4GB memory; 500GB hard drive; Windows 8

I took a look at the link. For $200 that sounds like a good deal. Im still not sold on Win 8 yet. My grandson has a laptop with Win 8. maybe I should try it out.

I wouldn't recommend Win 8 to anybody! Feels more like working on a smartphone than a computer...

It's all a free upgrade for your Win8 system anyway Julie. ;-)

Cheers.

I gave it several goes with with different builds on a spare HDD in my 2500K, but as Julie said, " Feels more like working on a smartphone than a computer...".

M$ just has to accept the fact that it just can't use 1 OS for everything and anything (even with this latest service pack business will not accept it).

Cheers.

I tend to agree, and there's still many things a workstation can do (content creation, video gaming) that you can't do on mobile devices. That's why I personally have reverted back to the Windows 95 days of putting shortcuts on my Desktop, including one to My Computer so I can access all of my stuff while reducing the amount I have to see the Start Screen. As long as I don't have to see the Start Screen, I'm actually very happy with Windows 8.1 and it's performance. Love the built-in features and tools too.

My company is very seriously considering doing away with laptops and moving everything over to tablets for the sales people. After trying Apple iPads, they're now looking at Windows 8 tablets that can turn into a mini-laptop via a keyboard/dock accessory.

My company isn't small by any means either. We have over 6000 employees and we're one of only four companies outside of the banking industry that have retained our AAA credit rating. Such a purchase from our company would be a rather large endorsement.

Yeah, it works fine, as long as you don't do too much with it, certainly no games... Lisa loves them.

I play games on Windows 8 all the time. Things seem speedier with it.

I think it's a hardware problem, it's running ok now. Still don't get much tasks on it though...

Could very well be a hardware problem then. My system is rather beefy.

I'm kind of leery about 'upgrading' to 8.1; a friend of mine tried to do that with his laptop (granted, 8.1 was still in Beta at that time) and a majority of his games (civilian-type Flight Sims, mostly, like MSFS 2004:ACOF [aka FS9] and MS Flight - which I also have both of) that worked well on 7 & 8.0 all of a sudden wouldn't work with 8.1, as well as the fact that it wouldn't allow him to revert back to 8.0!

A good friend of mine recently upgraded his laptop to 8.1 from 8.0, and found that while trying to move large video files from HD to USB Stick/Flash Drive didn't work anymore. He had to boot the machine in safe mode to get the file to transfer. (When I say large video, I'm talking about full length movies.)

Not sure that is related to 8.1. I've ripped my entire DVD/Blu Ray collection into .MKV format and copied them to flash drives and to network drives without issue. Something else must be at play, but it's a few experiences like this where people start blaming the first change they see as being the cause. Seeing people do this while working in IT for the last 10+ years has begun to make me quite jaded toward people. Nobody cares to dig deeper and find the root cause, and perception seems to be reality.

I've been using TeraCopy since Windows Vista. And yes, it works with Win 8.

BTW, full length movies can be any size from 700MB to 8GB plus.
