That's a wise warning in general (which is why we also have it in a sticky thread here). But it only applies to GPU tasks, and mherr has told us he's finished all the GPU tasks already: he should be good to go.

You are right as allways Richard. That´s why i said: You must see if this applies to you since his host are hidden we can´t be sure all GPU task are all ready realy done in all his hosts (if he have more than one). :)

BTW: Someone who has admin rights could start a fix thread asking those who ask for help first unhidde their hosts so we don´t waste time to point something that is all ready done or maybe point in a wrong direction.

Sorry Juan, I should have known better. I've selected the option that will allow my machines to display, but it seems to be taking a while to take affect.

Take some time to unhidde the hosts. Don´t worry it´s a common mistake, a lot of users hidde their hosts thinking it´s more safe but is not. Nobody could do nothing with the hosts with the info suplied by Boinc, at least AFAIK.

When we see the host is a lot easier to give the right clue, when we don´t we only could speak in "generic" solutions, and some time that point in a wrong direction, but it´s not your case.

Now we could see your hosts. You use Boinc 7.0.64 and old version, but don´t have the problem i related when you upgrade. Richard or others could tell you if is realy necessary to update, and if is explain why. I allways use the latest recomended version (actualy 7.2.33), if you want to DL it go to: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

I'd say in mherr's case it's *not* necessary to upgrade. There are new features (and occasional bugs) being added to BOINC all the time, but the stuff for NVidia cards is pretty stable by now. The changes in v7.2.33 are mainly of interest if you want to use:

* Intel HD graphics as GPUs (but mherr's 2nd generation i5s, with HD 3000, are just too old)
* Advanced scheduling features (down to the app_version level) in app_config.xml
* VirtualBox (used by very few BOINC projects, and not at all by SETI)

I guess I could forego the upgrade, then. You guys are great! The less steps to get my new cards rolling, the better!

My 2 cents, I'd go ahead and do the Boinc update while your GPU cache is dry.
Just takes a few miniutes. And it might help in some unforseen future update.
Plus you won't get those annoying need to update notices.

I updated my Bonic. Then the Nvidia Cuda update. Tried 5.5 but it wouldn't work
so I installed the 5.035 I put in that link. Then I checked for an updated
Nvidia driver. And last I did the updated Lunitic install. Everything worked
like a charm for me after that.

mherr170, as you run under "Anonymous platform" you'll be better off re-running the Lunatics installer to change from "Cuda 3.20" work to "Cuda 5.00".

[edit] And to remove the ATI GPU entries. [/edit]

Cheers.

You are right Phil, I may as well just do it.

I am so fickle =p

And thank you Wiggo, I will do just that.

I got the cards today and am trying to get things sorted now :)

Create an app_config.xml file in your boinc data directory.

<app_config>
<app>
<name>astropulse_v6</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>.2</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
<app>
<name>setiathome_v7</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>.2</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app_config>

Minor correction: app_config.xml needs to be in {BOINC Data directory}\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\

My goal is to run 4 AP on the cpu's and 2 AP on the GPU card. Would this app_config do that for me?
<app_config>
<app>
   <name>astropulse_v6</name>
   <version_num>601</version_num>
   <max_concurrent>4</max_concurrent>
 </app>
 <app>
   <name>astropulse_v6</name>
   <version_num>604</version_num>
   <max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
   <gpu_versions>
   <gpu_usage>.5</gpu_usage>
   <cpu_usage>.2</cpu_usage>
   </gpu_versions>
 </app>
 <app>
   <name>setiathome_v7</name>
   <max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
   <gpu_versions>
   <gpu_usage>.5</gpu_usage>
   <cpu_usage>.2</cpu_usage>
   </gpu_versions>
</app_config>

No, that sort of fine control isn't implemented on the Regular Recommended Boinc, and even then you're added entries that aren't in the regular <app_config> format,
and aren't in the extended <app_version> format either.

The format is:

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration#Application_configuration

<app_config>
   [<app>
      <name>uppercase</name>
      <max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
      <gpu_versions>
          <gpu_usage>.5</gpu_usage>
          <cpu_usage>.4</cpu_usage>
      </gpu_versions>
    </app>]
   ...
   [<app_version>
       <app_name>uppercase</app_name>
       [<plan_class>mt</plan_class>]
       [<avg_ncpus>x</avg_ncpus>]
       [<ngpus>x</ngpus>]
       [<cmdline>--nthreads 7</cmdline>]
   </app_version>]
   ...
</app_config>

The following should work, But you need to be running one of the Development versions of Boinc, ie, Boinc dev versions 7.2.29, 7.2.30, 7.2.32, 7.2.34, 7.2.35, 7.2.36, 7.2.37 or 7.2.38:

<app_config>
<app>
  <name>astropulse_v6</name>
  <max_concurrent>6</max_concurrent>
</app>
   <app_version>
       <app_name>astropulse_v6</app_name>
       <plan_class>601</plan_class>
       <avg_ncpus>1.0</avg_ncpus>
   </app_version>
   <app_version>
       <app_name>astropulse_v6</app_name>
       <plan_class>604</plan_class>
       <avg_ncpus>0.2</avg_ncpus>
       <ngpus>0.5</ngpus>
   </app_version>
 <app>
  <name>setiathome_v7</name>
  <max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
  <gpu_versions>
  <gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
  <cpu_usage>0.2</cpu_usage>
  </gpu_versions>
</app_config>

it's only one slot wide, so any double-width board won't fit.

Even though it's technically only one slot wide, you want to make sure that there's nothing plugged into those sockets at the edge of the board that might prevent the card from seating all the way.

Good point. There's a front-panel audio and front-panel USB headers that might interfere. OTOH, I've plenty of other machines I can swap it to if it proves problematic.

Well, I got one -- used from an Amazon affiliate for £50 (incl. £5 for postage). Plugged it in, and the machine wouldn't boot (Mint Linux); tried the dual boot of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 from an SSD and that worked, but lots of fiddling around and even plugging in an old monitor led to no success, until I tried again to boot from the SSD and it booted Mint from the HDD! These modern motherboards may be a trick too far...

Anyway, it's currently running and now I have two AP jobs running on each GPU, and six MB jobs running on the CPU (hyperthreading). The first jobs appear to be running just slightly slower than half the speed of the GTX560, so that might add another 9,000 or so to the machine's RAC. It's running at 64 C with the fan at 65%; the 560 is running 76 C and 95% fan.

It's running at 64 C with the fan at 65%; the 560 is running 76 C and 95% fan.

Noticed after a while that "top" reported consistently 17-20% idle, which is more than one CPU in an 8-(hyperthreaded)CPU machine, so I modded my app_info.xml file:
<app>
<name>astropulse_v6</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.49</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>.33</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
and now I'm running a seventh CPU WU and top shows usually less than 10% idle, but I can still watch iPlayer without glitches (well, SD anyway; contention sometimes drops me out of enough bandwidth for HD). RAC continues to climb, slowly, but still only 2500 above what it was on Monday -- and I'm running out of APs for it to crunch.
