I think the ultimate goal was to merely engage the younger audience of today like the original did for children of yesteryear.

I agree that the target audience is probably 11 to 17 year olds, but Eric and I have been watching with great interest. We both think the series is well done.

I'm sure that was supposed to be pointed sarcasm, you know, because imagination is not real and real is not imagination... but one drives the other.

Well, I will still be waiting for it to come out on DVD whatever the overall opinion of it might be because I LOVE all things space and can't BELIEVE I had the bad luck of having the same bad science teacher for four years before choosing which subjects I would study for my final 2 years at school!

I'd spend hours looking up at the stars each night but she made the subject seem so incredibly dull, that the only highlight of her lessons was seeing how many times her false teeth came flying out her mouth. Poor old thing - probably curbed her enthusiasm a little - but it may have resulted in me missing my calling in life :)

Einstein Said Nothing Can Move Faster Than Light? Yet if we magnify light that is far away is that light not moving faster than itself because we magnified it?

I would reason that photons of light are in fact something and not nothing, and they can be manipulated to move faster than itself. It also stands to reason that if inorganic material or organic material can be converted to light then reconstructed at the far end or a magnification process then we have achieved a form of hyperspace. Not by folding time and space, but by magnifying the light of objects at it's point of origin.

I admire the works I am reading of Dr. Michio Kaku though. At first I thought well, what has he formulated in theory likened to people like Einstein, or Feynman, Riemann, and others, but maybe I have not went deeper in my studies or his works. I am still reading the book Hyperspace and I am quite intrigued.

Hi DMG! I'm not familiar with his work - but you have me intrigued :) one to add to my reading list I think. :)

Does anyone know if Tyson participates in SETI? I googled SETI and his name and couldn't find an answer. I think he did say that he doubted that space-faring or "advanced" aliens would communicate in the same way we do.

Einstein Said Nothing Can Move Faster Than Light? Yet if we magnify light that is far away is that light not moving faster than itself because we magnified it?...

More fundamentally, information cannot 'travel' faster than the speed of light. That includes all of such as imparting an action or such as moving particles or propagating radiation... Look up the idea of "light cones".

When you try to magnify a beam of light, you in effect spread out the light beams so that a small image is expanded to become a more spread out and bigger image. That causes the magnified image to be dimmer. The speed of the light forming the light beams stays exactly at the same speed of light.

(A bit of further detail: If you use a glass magnifying glass, then the speed of light in the glass is less than the speed of light in air. So, the light from the air impinges the air-glass interface and slows down to the speed of light for glass. That is the refraction effect that allows the curved surface of the magnifying glass to produce a magnified image. The light 'speeds up' again at the following glass-to-air transition and will undergo further refraction.)

Love Da Way NGT mentioned The 6000 year old Earth, then talked about Stars 6000 to 13.4 Billion Light Years Away. Meaning, of course...Science Not Religion on Age of Earth. Duh.

Shortly Later, The Cartoon Man Star of Show this Episode tells his son 'bout a man, who has since died, and states 'May GOD Rest His Soul'.

Yeah, I know, 'they' were Scientists and Believers at Da Same Time Back in da Day. Or Acted The Believer, fO Society.

All Shows have Referenced Spirituality Big Time.

So, what 'is' 'it' GOD, Spirits, or Science?

Or Mumbo Jumbo till 'they' Get 'it' Right.

Pretty interesting episode on Sunday. I think I have a better understanding of electrons and their function in creating the dark bands in spectral analysis of light coming from stars.

Why can't it be both? Many scientists are believers in God, or a god. The idea that all scientists are Atheists and are trying to disprove the notion of God is a lie fed by the Extreme Right.

The message they are trying to send is that once we find proof or facts, religion should stop insisting on their untruths, such as the Earth only being 6000 years old, or Intelligent Design. Most scientists don't seem to have a problem with the notion of God, and the believe the answers they seek are to know God better.

You beat me to the punch. I was trying to think of a way to say something very similar. Many people that I know, while not accepting the Bible as a history or science book, still have faith in a supreme being.

I'm disappointed with the show. I've always enjoyed these types of shows but I find 'Cosmos' to be too much flash and not enough substance.
I found 'How the Universe Works' to be a much better show.
I never watched the original series so I don't know how it compares to that?

The show's main purpose seems to be just a little-deeper-than-the-surface of what we currently know about the Universe. Many people looking for more depth are going to be disappointed, but that's not the goal of this show.

Even though there's very little new content for me, I am still thoroughly enjoying the show just because it brings out the little inquisitive explorer within. ;-)

I never completed the original, but I still want to watch it because Carl Sagan was an amazing teacher of science. He had such a patience, and a complete understanding of things, and that has to be respected. From what I saw of the original, it wasn't much deeper in content than the new one, nor was it meant to be.

Some supposedly intelligent people who are leaders want to write fairy tales into the law.

A young girl from South Carolina noticed the state didn't have a state fossil as most do. Wooly Mammoth teeth were the first fossils found in the USA back before we were the USA in SC. She wrote to the state legislature suggest they make the Ma moth the state fossil. Great idea and it passed the House easily. Then it got to the Senate; all were in favor but ONE; Sen Peeler wasn't sure about this "fossil" myth. He finally agreed but with this addition to the law;
And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Is that dueling banjos I hear? No, that was not made a part of the law. Notre Dame is Catholic but I think they teach real science.

Through my new roku3 streaming media device I have found some online college science lectures conducted by Neil deGrasse Tyson and they go into more detail on the subjects covered in this new Cosmos series. Even so I an finding the Cosmos content interesting enough to watch.

NDT says 100s and 100s of thousands of years of 24/7/365, non-stop Volcanic Activity in Siberia caused Permian Extinction.

Then later lambasts HuWoMan for 150-200 years of CO2 Spewing causing Next Terrible Something or Other.

I doubt that any scientist predicts our effects will be at the same level, ie 90% of all species extinct.

Geez, you'd best avoid the finale episode if it's anything like Carl Sagan's was; might cause an aneurysm... heh.
