I have a GTX 760 in a Pentium 4 PC with 2GB RAM that just crunches WUs 'like crazy', and a GTX 780 in a Core i7 quad with 16GB RAM that seems slower than the 760 in the crappy box.

I have tried all the usual mentioned suggestions: multiple WU, OCing, being patient...

Both systems have Lunatics apps running. I know this is probably not all required info listed, but I just wanted to post out of frustration...

They are both running 2 instances and they both run 24 hrs a day. I just upgraded a 560 to a 760, but even the 560 seemed to eat through the WUs faster.

The 780 is running a few CPU WUs also, but I have ran it without them to see the results. Seem poor to me.

On the Cuda multibeam side I'd estimate it'll take me several months to extract as much as I can from GK110. Most of the compute potential is untapped, having around 60% of elapsed execution time tied up in driver latency. Mastering the Latency hiding techniques required to eliminate that is proving a challenge.

You forgot to mention the 760 is using XP while the 780 is running with 7. I know what happens when I move my nVidia cards from XP to 8....they slow down.

Screaming indeed. The fans are set up to 90%.

For AP yuou should get the same version that Juan is running. The rev 2000+something does not need a free core for 0% blanked AP WUs. The highly blanked WUs benefit from a free core.

Please don´t take me wrong, i just was to drunk to post anything else before. But petri33 understood and post the path.
Now with less alcohol in my system and after few aspirins...

What i try to say is, for now, until Jason unleash the new app with a optimization target for the 780/Titan family, if you have the 780 and want to squeeze a lot more from it, you need to dig from beta the latest version of the AP build r2058 or up who uses a lot less CPU to do it´s GPU work (sounds wierd but actualy is what happening). I not sure but i see in this forum someone who actualy have it for DL from his site just don´t remember the post.

This version is intended for advanced users only (needs a manual instalation). When you put it to run, you could easely run up to 3 AP (actualy 4 works a little faster but because my hosts are not crunchers only, i leave some processing power spare for the users) at at the same time without the need of a free core on your hosts. On the 780FTW running at stock speeds, the average time in this case is less than 1 hr to crunch each AP. So you host will produce about 2100 credits per hour (average of about 700 credit per WU) about 50K per day on a non dedicated cruncher just for the GPU plus the CPU work, in my case i allow only 1 CPU WU running at a time because the host is used for other jobs, but it could run up to 4 (the number of cores avaiable with the I5). Since you have a i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz with 8 cores, in your 780 host your performance will be a lot greater than mine. But remember allways YMMV, each host is unique so test is necessary to obtain the optimal setting.

Of course you could crunch 1-3 or even 4 MB WU at a time that will rise your GPU utilization to almost 100% with MB or very close to that if you crunch AP (depends on the % black). Just an info after few test your GPU usage on the 780 is only about 50% when you run only 1 WU at a time on the stock build. Jason post the explanation why in some place in this forum (again i not remember where).

I crunch 3 WU in any combination (MB or AP) on my slow and few core avaiable I5´s hosts and works perfect. You could browse my hosts and see the very small CPU usage this new build has, actualy the build works in any other host/GPU but you have more gain if you have a fast GPU (like the 780). Just remember it´s a beta build, not totaly tested or released to the general users so wierd things could happening (actualy almost no one in my case, i use in all my hosts).

For example this host has a i5-2310 CPU @ 2.90GHz and is actualy crunching 4 AP at a time (3 on the GPU + 1 at the CPU) and reaches on the GPU just 63C with the fans running at 85% (i use evga precision-x) and the ambient temp now is around +30C (no AC)

I once had 6 WUs running on the GPU and it sill never hit near 100% utilization which seems strange to me. It didn't seem to help so I backed it to 3 WUs and then the current 2 WUs. I have ran them without any CPU WUs running so that the GPU would get full access to power. Still seems to run less than my GTX 760 on a P4 system with 2GB of RAM.

If you are telling me that there isn't any 'stable' apps optimized for the 780 yet, then I will just wait...

I find it odd that the other guys friend with the linux box is 'tearing through them' though. I realize that everything is relative, but my much weaker box is kicking the stronger one's butt.

More than 4 WU at a time just waste resources, the optimal number is 3 or 4 (test is needed).

Try the new build, since it uses a lot less CPU power it´s runs realy fast and you will notice the improve on the daily credit production. If you free your CPU you could use it to crunch some WU too.

The 780/Titan optimized app will take some time AFAIK Jason is working on it but not expect any new on that in short time.

If you need PM your e-mail and i could send it to you but be aware i only have the windows version. The build is very stable and i use it for almost a month without problems in all my hosts with diferent CPU/GPU configurations.

BTW if you crunhc AP gpu utilization will allmost never reaches 100% due the way AP crunching works but that will expect to change with x42. So don´t worry some WU will give you more or less GPU usage but that is normal.

I rebooted my system and went into the BIOS settings. I disabled my built-in Intel graphics chip and turned my system fan speed to max. Rebooted the system and I am seeing a nice increase in WU crunching. Even the 4 CPU WUs are incrementing(%) much faster than before.

My MB are old and the graphics are disabled. In theory the crunchig speed must not changed if you disable or not it,. Be aware some WU crunch faster than others so that could be your case.

I use evga precision-x to handle the gpu fan speed so it speed up the fan only when it´s realy needed. It´s free to DL from EVGA site, Try

I cranked up the motherboard/processor fan speed. I agree that disabling the onboard video shouldn't matter, but something did...


I use Precision-X also for the GPU fan speed. Pretty nice program.

Actually Haswell CPU's run quite hot due to their small die size and having the GPU component running as well will only create more heat.

Also if you don't have some really good cooling in place these CPU's are known to throttle themselves down pretty quickly to keep temps under control.
