We used to have several threads running about that issue. The short answer is that there is a problem in some of the validator/transitioner programs that cause this, and the only way to fix it is for Eric or Matt to run a script to clean those up. Probably about time they did it again. Long answer: One of the two validated tasks missed deadline, and you got the resend. Before you completed your task, the late task finished and the validators, seeing two successfully completed tasks, validated them, and then marked the Tasks and Work Unit for assimilation and file deletion. Problem is, they don't always check for additional tasks outstanding, so when you completed your (3rd) task, there was no other task to validate against, and yours went into "pending" limbo. Several times we've heard reports they fixed it, but new instances keep turning up. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

Then there are WUs like this one: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=1246880995 where a credit-granting script ended up causing more problems than it fixed, I think. Credit was granted to a host whose task had a computation error, thus erroneously marking the WU as validated, when it really wasn't. That prevented the task from being resent when the next host timed out. So, the WU just sits there, marked as validated but with no canonical result to put into the science database. I think there are an awful lot of these out there, although I've just got the one. Ideally, WUs like this should somehow be resent to another host to get a true validation and canonical result....but I don't think I'll hold my breath! |
