If you have a SETI@home account, please make sure the e-mail address you enter on the gift form exactly matches the one in your account. Then after the donation is processed the icon will appear next to your name on our website (in stats pages, message boards, etc.) for the following year. If you wish to keep this donation anonymous, please still enter in the correct e-mail address, but also enter the word "anon" anywhere in the field labeled "Special Instructions for this gift." You will have the option to make donations anonymous later on. Minimum donation is $10.

Ah, one more myth dispelled.

I've contributed. I've contributed for a long time.

If people want to make it a RAC p*ssing contest then fine. I'll go elsewhere, I'm clearly not macho enough for this forum :)

My idea is to make this a community thing not a contest.

Not much of a community if you exclude people.

Oi Es!!!

You will NOT go elsewhere, I expressly forbid it. If necessary I will be honoured to donate $10 to get you a green star. We need people like you around here to keep us all sane.

Harrrumph.

Happy New Year ;-))

I've donated in the past and I may in the future as and when I feel I want to. That's up to me. I contribute my computing power to the project and my electricity. I contribute as much as I am currently willing and able.

Please don't contribute on my behalf. That's not the point.

There is a minimum rac for posting already that ensures people contribute to post here. I really don't understand the point or the problem.

Sten, your vociferous aversion to money donations has been long noted. Since your RAC is several orders of magnitude greater than the discussed cut off I think your bombastic statement is a bit off topic.

Some of us are small people here contributing what we can because we are interested in the project.

Occasionally I've had a green star next to my name, I have always understood the donations to be voluntary.

Having a separate forum for the elite doesn't sit well with me, we are already having massive problems with the elites on this planet.

The politcal forums should be open for all, people should not be excluded, we have moderators there for a reason.

A green star is not the only way to contribute, crunching counts. I'm just saying do one or the other. Doing nothing means, by definition you are not part of the project.

An excellent +1 for the last two posts of Stern's and Hev's.

That is quite agreeable but the point is, it was suggested as Stern plainly highlighted. That was more than good enough for me and it seems others as well.

Here's the problem. The project is tight for funds, a green star(donation) to enable one to post genuine or trivia on the forums does sound like an excellent way to limit that trivia as well as other issues & also increase funding for the project.

However, with the current economic crisis which is a lot harsher than the politicians and media make out, $10 for quite a few people is too much to take off the family's table for the sake of posting on a forum.

Some of those people are more than likely struggling and after a hard day's work, wind down by visiting said forum to chat with friends and see how their rigs are crunching.

For the sake of the few, many lose out. Doesn't say much for the project with friends listed on one's account page now does it?

Second problem!

Only applying the green star to enable one to post in the political forum? That sounds like censorship to me, so either green star to post or not at all.

Which brings us back to the first problem for those who cannot afford that as yet, have a problem on their rigs and cannot post to resolve it because of a green star issue.

I am opposed to both suggestions. Having a higher RAC just to post in one section of the forum is just plain wrong. Why should anyone be excluded jsut because of what ever reason they cant contribute more.
And making some one pay just so they can voice an opinion is also wrong.

And Im betting that some of the ones you like to exclude would pay the ten bucks and keep the RAC just a bit higher just so they could continue to try and get our goats.

Yes the political forum can get quite heated from a few posters in here. If you get aggravated by it, Just imagine how the mods feel. They get it from both sides. And I can guess some mods dont even like passing through this forum so its left up to the few brave ones to wade in and do the thankless job.

Ive have noticed that the longer bans being given out have made things nicer in here. Maybe they should get longer.

So I say if you have the rac to post, You should be able to post anywhere you desire. Just disregard the trolls.

Some could cut their 24/7 machines OFF for a few days, few weeks, or months, and the MONEY SAVED from Less Electrical Use, can be used for a $10 Donation, once-a-year.

Is The SETI Crunch Drug SO POwerful, as to STOP The Above Donation Avenue, from Happenning?

CASH to SETI is King. Electrons Flowing Through Machines is...WEIRD, when a Slight, Short Stoppage can Provide Needed CASH.

Eh, WTF.

So Many Here Believe RATIONAL and CRITICAL Thinking is The End All to ALL The World's Problems.

Do The Above As Stated and 'IT' 'is' Very RATIONAL and Provides CRITICAL CASH to SETI.

A Rolling Cut Your Machine Off for a Few Dollars Cash for SETI could be Instituted by SomeOne and Others Who Care.

Huh? Frakk 'it'.

Maybe the mods should award longer bans, but modified by factors determined by green star and RAC. Something similar to;

Length of ban
Star x (RAC/100)

Where Star = 2, No Star =1.

So that if the guilty party has a green star and a RAC of 200, and is given a 4 week holiday then,
4 weeks = 1 week
2 * 2

and if guilty party has no star and RAC of 1

4 weeks = 400 weeks
1 x 0.01

Bit extreme but you get the idea.

edit] 2nd thought, maybe the RAC factor could be 4 if well below expected, 3 if low, 2 if close to expected, 1 if high.

Its allways the same posters who get banned. So why award bad behavior with a lesser ban just because they have a green star or high RAC?

To get back on topic this thread is not about banishment. My original point is that one should contribute to the project, credits or money in order to be a part of the project and posting on all the threads is currently an earned privilege, a min RAC of one is the current standard.
Our favorite presently banned chronic troll regularly has a single digit RAC, that person is not contributing, they have another agenda and it does not involve science as most here know it.
