I will be installing a Geforce GTX 650 Ti in the next couple of days. Other than installing the latest drivers and using the Lunatics installer, are there any other optimizations that are recommended?

Thanks

Are you familiar with doing an App_config.XML file?

I have looked in the Program Data\BOINC\projects\setiathome folder but do not see that file. I have modified the ap_cmdline files on my AMD machines.

Is it in a different location?

Edit the app_info.xml file created by the Lunatics installer in the SETI folder to change the counts to .5. Use Notepad, not an xml editor.

Or, use Notepad to create an app_config.xml file in the same directory. Here's the format:

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ClientAppConfig#

This one should work:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>astropulse_v6</name>
<max_concurrent>4</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1.0</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
<app>
<name>setiathome_v7</name>
<max_concurrent>9</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>.04</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

The max_concurrent lines are optional and can be omitted.

If you use app_config.xml, it can be edited and reread without restarting BOINC. Settings in it supersede the ones in App_info.xml

Thanks for all the great info. I am actually going to have to move some cards around. The AMD 645 machine is the only one with a power supply that will support Geforce so it will have to go in that machine. So far, here is my plan...

1. Remove the Radeon 7750 and uninstall the AMD Catalyst drivers from the AMD 645 (Win 7) machine.
2. Install the GeForce card and install the latest drivers.
3. Re-run Lunatics and choose the nVidia options.
4. Restart BOINC.
5. Move the Radeon 7750 card to the AMD 635 (Win 7) machine, replacing the 6670.
6. Move the Radeon 6670 card to the Intel P4 (Win XP) machine and load the last Radeon drivers that support OpenCL (11.2?).
7. Run Lunatics on the P4 and select the AMD options.

Does anyone see any problems with that plan?

For the Nvidia driver, go for the latest WHQL driver. I avoid Betas and the "Game Ready" versions (unless you have the specific new games they support). When you change the AMD 645 machine from ATI to Nvidia apps, any ATI tasks on hand will be trashed, so run down the cache first.

I had not considered that the tasks would be abandoned. I have now set that machine for no new tasks and will let it run down. When I upgrade the other machine from a Radeon 6670 to 7750, I assume that it will pick up the ATI tasks that are partially complete?

The ATI for ATI swap should not be a problem.

Edit the app_info.xml file...
This one should work:...

It works perfectly; not only did it bring my GPU usage up from the mid 60s to the mid 90s it adjusts the CPU according to the work being done.

This should be a sticky.

Guy and Shrevnitz.

And somebody PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong!

It.s not Microsoft that dropped Opencl support,
it's AMD/ATI that dropped it for Windows XP.

Guy, if you can find the driver that is working on
your one XP machine and load it on your one that isn't
yo should get it crunching APs. Then tell Shrevnitz
which one it is so he can do the same. A search of
the forums should supply more information as this has
come up it in the past few years.

Edit: Duh, I believe the same circumstances happen with
Nvidia cards also.

Or maybe it's just my imagination.

Upgrading to Win7 64 would still be a better
way to go,IMO.

For me XP was dead when Win7 was released. The only PC I have here now with XP on it is my jukebox.

Cheers.

And so did Intel.

All the tabs/numbers/versions/file names/etc under the device manager are identical between those two XP boxes.

XP is dying.

Intel is not Microsoft. Are the Nvidia drivers exactly the same?

For me, I think 7 is dead now that I have 8.1. I still can't stand the Start Screen, but the OS is faster, lighter, and has better multi-monitor support. And I absolutely love all the under-the-hood changes in 8.1.

Win8x is much slower for me to use than Win7 actually, but each to their own and I have no problems here running with 3 monitors on either of my rigs.

Hopefully the the next version of Windows will be actually be Windows again and not Tiles.

Cheers.

Yeah, 7 had no problems with my triple monitors either, but I had to use an addon to get the taskbar across all three screens whereas in 8.1 it is supported by the OS itself.

I would like to see that too, but I wouldn't count on it. The trend is going toward touch-based devices and Microsoft needs to be ready for that.
