The ESA space telescope GAIA has lifted off from Kourou atop a Soyuz-Fregat Russian rocket. Its mission, if successful. is to map the Milky Way in 3d taking data on about a billion stars. I can barely image the computing power needed to analyze that mass of data. GAIA@home anyone?

Edit. Separation of GAIA from Soyuz-Fregat accomplished. It should reach the L2 Lagrange point in about one month.
Edit again. Data will reach 1 petabyte and the mission duration is 5 years.

This is a first rate scientific mission and could give also results in fields that were not present at the time of its design such as eso-planets and dark matter. One scientist at the press conference in Italy said that he expects the unexpected.

Gaia will observe 1% of all the stars in our galaxy, allowing astronomers to determine its origin and evolution

update..

Was out Galaxy formed from a black hole??

A new breakthrough using data from the Gaia-ESO project provides new insight into our Milky Way galaxy. It supports the fact that the galaxy might have formed the inside-out with the inner region forming faster than the outer reaches.

I see stars!

The billion-star surveyor Gaia's test image of the is "coming into focus."

Once routine measurements begin Gaia will provide a staggering amount of information about the galaxy, including "a dense cluster of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud," a European Space Agency news release reported.
