NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has observed water vapor above the frigid south polar region of Jupiter's moon Europa, providing the first strong evidence of water plumes erupting off the moon's surface.

Did anyone catch the film, Europa Report? Don't bother.

edit

A new analysis of data from NASA's Galileo mission has revealed clay-type minerals at the surface of Jupiter's icy moon Europa that appear to have been delivered by a spectacular collision with an asteroid or comet. This is the first time such minerals have been detected on Europa's surface. The types of space rocks that deliver such minerals typically also often carry organic materials.

Juno is a NASA New Frontiers mission to the planet Jupiter. Juno was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on August 5, 2011 and will arrive in July 2016.

It also featured heavily in the Space Odyssey series.

The only one I've seen is Voyage to the Planets, by BBC. Same One??
I enjoyed that :)

Thanks Chris,

Sorry never seen those episodes.

What do you think about Europa?

Well Lynn, in my opinion, I would say that "2001 a Space Odyssey" was probably one of the most important and greatest Sci Fi films of the 20C. Even back then when it was written, Arthur Clarke was aware that the Jupiter moon Europa, discovered in 1610 by Galileo, had unusual properties that weren't expected, and more of which have been discovered since. I think there is more to find out yet.

The 2001 screenplay was written by Clarke and Stanley Kubrick jointly, based on the seed idea in "The Sentinel" that an alien civilization has left an object on the Moon to alert them to mankind's attainment of space travel. In addition, the 1953 short story contains elements of the first section of the film, in which the ancestors of humans are apparently given an evolutionary "nudge" by extraterrestrials. As of 2013, there are no plans for a third or fourth film.

Yes, remember 2001: A Space Odyssey, great picture.

I also remember, 2010 is a 1984 American science fiction film written and directed by Peter Hyams. It is a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, and is based on Arthur C. Clarke's novel 2010: Odyssey Two, a literary sequel to the film.

A joint U.S.-Soviet expedition is sent to Jupiter to learn what happened to the Discovery.

Both great films.

William , only remember the two.

Hubble Space Telescope spots fleeting plumes of water on Europa that may reach more than 20 times the height of Mt. Everest.

http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-water-geysers-europa-jupiter-icy-moon-life-agu-20131212,0,865937.story?utm_content=bufferfe1b6&utm_source=buffer&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=Buffer#ixzz2nK5KGSB5

The discovery, described in the journal Science and at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco, shows that Europa is still geophysically active – and that this world in our own solar system could hold an environment friendly to life.

Europa is probably heated by tidal forces due to Jupiter's crushing gravity actually bending and flexing the moon like it were a rubber ball.

Just watched a cool Sci-Fi movie named "Europa Report". It was presented like a documentary about a privately funded international mission to land on Europa. Very well done.

Thanks for posting this link, Julie. I had a question though, basic wrap up of what we believe needs to be present for a planet to harbour life on it summed to:

* a solar system with a Sun
* a planet the right distance from the sun in order to preserve liquid water at the surface
* a comet/asteroid to hit it at the right time bringing water
* carbon
* a celestial body (moon or planet) of sufficient mass to stabilize the tilt of the planet’s rotation and/or absorb incoming shocks

So was the Wesley impact of 2009 what caused the plume of water vapor on Europa? And are if we happen to find life there you all are not going to all of a sudden now say Jupiter is Europa's moon and not a planet, right?

p.s. RE: previous movie base: Ya'll forgot "Gattica" the movie.

Your welcome IANNA, welcome to the boards:)

I think the Wesley impact didn't have that much influence on Europa, maybe following links could shed some light on your question
