Message 1450484 - Posted: 6 Dec 2013, 5:08:36 UTC

I just realized that my e-mail address on my old account was still active, and got a reminder from seti to return, but a while back I made a new account since I thought this account was long gone. This account has never been used with BOINC and I read that seti classic accounts can be merged with BOINC accounts.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_classic.php

Now I would like to use this account, and add the credits and stuff from my never accounts to this one.

If you're already using BOINC
Are you already running SETI@home/BOINC, but with a different email address than you used with SETI@home Classic? You can Claim your SETI@home Classic workunits.

But when reading the above, it looks like my old classic account will be merged into my BOINC account and loose my creation date from june 99 (and that is totally uncool)

So my question is, what will actually happen if I try merge accounts?

The account you posted here with was already merged with a BOINC account (otherwise you couldn't post on the BOINC forums by signing in with it). You can only merge 1 Classic account with 1 BOINC account.

I have exactly the same difficulty - been away for several years, new computer, new email addresses and can't remember the email address for my classic account. I can see by doing a user search that my account is still listed and there are points to claim and merge with my newly created account.

The search results show my old USER ID number. It would seem there should or ought to be a way to get into an old account or retrieve the old email address using my USER ID number but all I see everywhere I look is 'ya gotta have that old email address.' In this time of high technology and in such a high technology pursuit as SETI/BOINC, it seems implausible that one cannot retrieve an old account when the system has my ID. Any thoughts? Or should I just bend over? Thanks

SETI@home only uses the email address as the account identifier (it doesn't even verify that the email address is accurate or active). Therefore the only way to retrieve an account from then would be via the email address.

Unfortunately, this means your only choice is to try to remember what email address you would have used around that time frame.

The search results show my old USER ID number.

Are you certain your old account was a Classic account? Is it possible your old account was a BOINC account?

I know it started out as classic (August 2001). Whether it switched when the BOINC thing started I have no idea. What difference does it make? Here's the link to my old account information: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=705557

USED ID = 705557

Regardless I still think it's rather archaic that someone's dusty old email address is the ONLY way to get account access. Maybe that's why the SETI project hasn't found any little green men yet - they're too restrictive and anal retentive in how they let the green men answer back. Lol.

It matters because you cannot merge two BOINC accounts, so if it is already a BOINC account, you're not looking to merge, and thus you don't have the same problem as the OP.

That is a BOINC account. You cannot merge it with the one you're posting with.

You have an account now. You have access to crunch. It doesn't appear to be the ONLY way to volunteer for SETI@home. Perhaps little green men don't want to be found because people make snide comments about something as petty as access to an old account.

LOL LOL ...

You stay in the street and yell:
"This is MY house, I know the street address, you HAVE to let me in!"

Police:
"Do you have a KEY to this house?
Do you have an ID-card that shows you live here?
Do you have a spare key in your neighbor?
... No to all? Then you MAY be a robber!"

Since this is BOINC account:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=705557

... no merge is allowed to avoid cheat (e.g. steal of accounts by direct physical access to your "friends'" computers)

How can you PROOF that you own this SETI@home/BOINC account (so you can use it INSTEAD of this you post with)?
You OF COURSE can't use userid which is just like street address (visible to anyone)

For server to let you in this account you have "only" 3 Options:

1) 'a KEY' analogy:
email + Password
(Password for SETI@home account, not for email box)

2) 'an ID-card' analogy:
Retrieve one of these computers:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/hosts_user.php?sort=rpc_time&rev=0&show_all=1&userid=705557

(Oh, you don't have them anymore? Mind this story: http://money.cnn.com/2013/11/29/news/bitcoin-haul-landfill/)

Search the HDDs (including 'hidden' folders) for file:
account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml

If you succeed - say here 'I found the file' and instructions to use it will follow ...
(you need 'the file' from old HDD, not the computer you use now)

3) 'spare key' analogy:
Use 'Forget Password' link
(if you have working email address - why use email from ISP, it will vanish if you change ISP, Most FREE email services last much longer >10 years)

Hi, with a similar problem. I could not logon to my original ID ages ago but I remember the email address but for the life of me not the password (that email address is obsolete now & cant access). A couple of years ago I got frustrated and created this account. My other ID 382267 and a user for SETI@home member since 2 Aug 1999. Is it possible to merge the accounts??? or what can I do to resolve and go back to my original id and join date. Thanks
