Today, I twice visited Nelson Mandela's house in Houghton, Johannesburg. First, the running club with whom I regularly do a long training run on a Sunday morning readjusted its schedule to allow us to run past Madiba's home. At that early stage of the day, things were relatively quiet, and we spent a few contemplative moments viewing the shrine of flowers, candles, and messages that has been growing outside his home. In the late afternoon, my wife and I took our young children there, and we joined what seemed like tens of thousands of others to place flowers and a card containing personal messages from my family on the (now much larger) shrine. I even caught a glimpse of Mandela's grandson, Mandla. The mood at the site of Mandela's home was uplifting. Whilst mourning the passing of our global icon, South Africans are also celebrating a life well lived.
