Background: I was able to run Boinc 7.2.28 with no problems on this server. I then finished the server's AD configuration and made it a Domain Controller. Boinc 7.2.28 still ran with no problems and that is because is was installed before the server became a DC (come to find out). But when I tried to upgrade to 7.2.33 today it uninstalled 7.2.28 and now it will not finish the 7.2.33 install due to the boinc_master creation error...go figure. I have even tried to create this account by hand, still no luck. I have even promoted it and the other existing boinc accounts to domain admin and left them in domain local under security and again as distribution groups; still no luck finishing the install. When I researched why this is I came across this link: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=5616 Lesson learned: Don't upgrade your Boinc software if it is running fine on your DC until they start using global accounts. If the link's statement is true then the question I have is: When will they start using global accounts??? This DC doesn't use a lot of CPU or its GPU...its a shame not to put this computational power back to work. And I will not install the older Boinc versions, I shouldn't have to, the programmers should have used the global accounts...IMO. |

You can install newer BOINC versions (post rev 5), just not using the windows installer. If you want to use only the CPU, you can also revert to BOINC 5.10.45 (last pre rev 6 version). I never tried the installation without installer, so I can't help with that, but I have seen forum threads about the topic, either here or at the BOINC dev boards. When will they start using global accounts? The same question was asked 5 years ago so I don't expect a fix soon: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3419 Probably they don't want to invest time in fixing this because so few people use Domain Controllers for BOINC More to read: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3615 http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Release_Notes#BOINC_7.2_incompatible_with_Domain_Controllers Manual Installation of BOINC on Windows Server (get the linked .PDF for full instructions): http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r27926916-Manual-Installation-of-BOINC-on-Windows-Server PDF: http://www.dslreports.com/r0/download/2067773~0fab61f160694eaf32e8be319d5b32c6/Manual%20Installation%20of%20BOINC%20on%20Windows%20Server.pdf  - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :)  |

The instructions from this PDF can be simplified by just jump from: "6. Click Finish." ... to: "7. Create shortcuts to where ever you want ..." (i.e. skip everything in between the above two steps - BOINC will run from the folders (program and data) created in the step: "5. Change the location to the folder you’ve created in step 1 and click Install." )  - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :)  |
