I have been a proud volunteer and crazed lover of SETI@home for many a year (well, a couple) and run 3 of your projects. I am expecting a new arrival for my birthday (and Beethoven's) but am not supposed to know about it and will happily donate more time and CPUage and GPUage to more SETI@home projects. My mission statement is "you can never have too much SETI, or weird-st00fs going on, pl0x, pwn3d!" Just kidding; I'm lame and a geek trifecta; music, math and computers. Oh, and gaming, if Runescape can be considered a game. Personally, it's a glorious waste of time, but hey! Everyone needs a hobby and I digress.

I recently downloaded the new Seti@home V 7.00 and then, the Oracle VM machine. I rebooted between each download in order to ensure the downloads were "clean." Last night, was the first time I had a chance to run SETI@home. All seemed well, until last night, or rather, early this AM, when I experienced a failure with the graphics portion. I just wanted to report this, and post my hardware configuration.

I think I need to un-install both packages, and reboot from a cold boot and then install just the VM Oracle box. Is this correct? When I went back to school for a computer science degree after I had gotten a degree in music performance, because my ex-husband, who was also a violist was mad that I got to tour with the Moody Blues and he didn't, and hey, the money was all coming to the same house and it was apparent that the Zither Fairy wasn't going to appear and change me into a Zither player, everything should be hunky-dorey? No?

So, to recap: Uninstall both, reboot, install just the Oracle VM box and all should be well. I never read a computer text book in college and I fear I didn't read the instructions. This is probably either the most entertaining, or the most infuriating thread you'll read all day...

I run a lean and clean system and have NEVER had a problem with SETI@home before; I disabled AVG during the installs. This info may be helpful, but if I've overlooked something, please feel free to weigh in. I am going to be adding a quad core x2 after my birthday.

If I'm going in the right direction, as to just adding the VM, a simple "yea" will do. If not, please let me know. I'm pretty low maintenance. Thank you so much. It is such a kick to be part of this endeavor! I really, really love this!

VirtualBox is not used at the projects you run. So you can uninstall it if you only run Seti, SAT and Cosmology. Furthermore, the projects you run are independent of each other. There's only one Seti@Home project which runs from Berkeley, Cosmology@Home runs from Illinois, SAT@Home runs from Russia.

They all run under the BOINC framework. You're probably confused with that. BOINC allows projects to easily and cheaply get volunteers and their hardware, to do their calculations for them. Although BOINC also runs from Berkeley, even from the same building as Seti, they're not the same and they're not related. You may want to read the papers about it.

The numbering of the Seti applications has nothing to do with the numbering of the BOINC clients. It's a pure coincidence that Seti released their v7.00 applications and BOINC released versions 7.0 and now 7.2

With all that done, your graphics problem: What model Nvidia videocard do you have? Does it have drivers installed from the manufacturer, or done by Windows?
