Welcome friends to the 19th installment of the Critter Cafe.

If you are new to the Critter Cafe, welcome! We have only two rules here.

1. Nothing is off topic
2. All are welcome

Critter Cafe Installment #19 is dedicated to our recently departed friend, John Clark. John was a frequent poster in the Critter Cafe and I know we are all feeling his loss deeply.

In light of John's love of dogs, here is a recent picture of me with my buddy Adam. Adam is a Transylvanian Hound.

Angela, You have a vampire dog out in the sun?

And its nice that you have dedicated it to John. I loved his humor.

I blew up the picture so I could see your face, and it made Adam's face look like a vulture.

Dude, I have enough chins without you adding any!!!

LOL!!!!!! I do love a theme and "attention to detail" is my middle name, but Adam happens to live year round (even in October) with my cousin Maria. Maria and I went for a little walk and Adam could not be convinced to stay home. Eric and I don't have any dogs, but whenever we want to walk one we can generally find one. Most often we walk our neighbor's dog Maya. Maya is mostly half lab and mostly half Rhodesian Ridgeback, so she loves people and wants to hunt every cat in the neighborhood.

You do? I didn't notice. But after growing my beard, I decided my father was right: it hides 3 or 4 chins.

Most everyone who knows me in life and online (mostly on Facebook) already knows
that I keep a very messy house. I seldom clean. Honestly. This is due, mostly, to my
suffering from chronic fatigue and depression. So to those of you who don't already
know, I'm not revealing any secrets here. That being said, I have been finding evidence
of raccoons in places where there is no food out for them to steal. The photo below is
of the TV stand in my TV room, which is not a great distance from the food - only
about 25 feet (7.62 meters). Still, there is no food in that room, so what was the
raccoon looking for? (I dragged my finger through the dust a day or two before the
footprint showed up.)

raccoon looking for?...

Food. You know there was no food there, but the raccoon did not know that until he/she checked it out. A raccoon's motto is "you never know until you try".

I suppose that makes sense.

Raccoons like to watch movies while you're asleep. They are very sneaky and bring their own headphones.

Leave some popcorn out for them. They like to eat popcorn when they are watching movies.

I had a close encounter with a raccoon Friday night. I was in the bedroom and heard
a commotion in the kitchen. I assumed the cats had knocked something over, as they
often do. I went out to look but didn't notice anything, that is until I saw one of the
cats looking at the kitchen window rather oddly. That's when I noticed the frightened
raccoon on the windowsill praying to the raccoon god that, if he/she stayed real still,
no one would see it. Prayer unanswered. I saw it. So I went over and talked gently and
calmly. The dogs hadn't seen it, which was a very good thing. The absence of barking
certainly played a part in its keeping calm. I opened the window behind it with no
issue. When it realized the window was open it calmly went out, hesitating a little bit,
no doubt to decide which was the best way to proceed. It stuck its nose up a couple of
times, and didn't bother with the few bits of dry dog food I offered. Eventually it
climbed down and disappeared.

What had happened was that I'd run out of cat food, so the furry little rascal decided
to see if there was anything else in the kitchen to munch. It apparently was attempting
to get up on the refrigerator (where it would have found an open box of Honey Nut
Cheerios), when it came face to face with one of my cats that likes to rest up there from
time to time. The commotion was a couple of empty, plastic, gallon water bottles falling
to the floor.

There must be no limit to how far these creatures will explore looking for replacement
food. I've been leaving less and less cat food out at night. Eventually I'll leave none out
overnight, hoping the raccoons will realize the gravy train has finally left the station. (I'll
continue to leave some outside.) But I won't be surprised if I should wake up one night
to dogs chasing raccoons out of my bedroom!

(I thought about taking a picture, but not until it was too late.)
