I want sound give me sound , I want to be able to hear what your picking up, and it cant be hard to implement surely , it would make much better software.

How would it make it better? The sounds of space sound incredibly similiar to a radio tuned between stations. In other words: static.

I don't know about you, but I think such an addition would be quickly turned off by most people, or at least certainly me. I don't need any disruptive noise that adds nothing to the search while I'm using my computer.

Then go to waves and listen to the generated .wav files


Notes:

The script was written by someone else, I edited it a year ago for better file management.
The file wu2wav-boinc-BilBg_2.rar contains six SETI@home Enhanced (v6) WUs (in WUs directory)
I specially collected WUs with more signals in them (look in WUs\Info directory)

Unfortunately the script have to be changed (do not work) on current SETI@home v7 WUs (they have a little different format)
If somebody want to try to edit the script - go ahead... (the proper bytes have to be extracted from WUs)

Sound would be nice, and fun, but we are never going to find a signal if we can't see the real transmissions. We are just rechecking old input and the image loops and loops back to the same thing....it's not real time is it?

we aren't rechecking anything. So far since the inception of BOINC WU's are processed once(ran by 2 or more computers to get a consensus if signals in a WU) Some work is from what was considered unusable data from a few years ago but they've been able to get the data out of the tapes now.

REAL TIME- were we expecting a call. Does a tape that is running right now hold the signal or one from 5 years ago. For real time observation to work each computer would have to be attached to the satellite records and receive work as its made. This is unlikely to ever happen. Say we do find a signal in a background noise. We'd still have to confirm it and respond to it. being that the closest star is 6 light years away it seems like we have a great deal of time to work on a response or prepare for their visit.

I meant is the real time from the actual signal to the spot we're checking. The rechecking is because my feed read from Arecibo 2007. I thought that might be when that signal was sent out and where it was now.......


We just had a 6.5 earthquake felt from a spot near Arecibo and I googled NOOA's Weather Service and some "prophet" said there would be a tsunami around today from a meteor. Maybe he had real time video for asteroids. Anyways, I bought a fan to keep the computer cool at night so whoever has real time signals can practice their binary phase code replies...let's just pray if there is confirmation, they aren't like me, and don't understand it.

The graphic is a representation of the signal being analysed or at least the frequency/time domain information from that signal. It is far from real time. It is not uncommon to be processing data to be several years old as the project periodically sends out data that was, at the time of its collection, unprocessable for whatever reason.

no, the processing is not happening in real time. The data is recorded onto Hard Drives - which are shipped to Berkeley, processed into individual work units which are duplicated into tasks. Depending on what is happening, you might be working on data from last week, last month, or last year. The sort of which data to process next is a "box sort" -- put the drives into a box, and pick out one at random to process next. I believe that they are mostly keeping up, so we are processing the data about as fast as it is coming from Aricebo.
