In case Julie doesn't get the reference in my "I can't swim!" caption.

(Yes, I got the quote wrong.)

From the Caption Contest:

Number two, only because I think Eric's mistress would have
at least two legs or so:
Oh no!!! Eric has a mistress!!!

My friend, you greatly underestimate my husband's love of fishing!

Get that bass!

It seems that we have a problem in the tool guessing game. I suspect people are not playing because they don't what to win and run the next stage of the game.

May I suggest a slight change to the rules, so that a winner, if they do not run the next stage declines and the game is open to any one who wants to play.

Well, I would love to play and win, but I'm stumped.

Sounds good to me, but with a simple mechanism to make sure we don't end up with multiples running at once. I guess once the winner is declared and has declined, people should post their desire to go next and then wait a few minutes to make sure they were indeed the first to volunteer.

We went to see a tree in Lummen yesterday with my brother in law, it was a very mythical place it was. The tree is called 'the 1000 year old oak'. It's the second oldest oak in Europe:

Mysterious tool time 4

I'd love to do glass blowing Gordon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but the blue pot/vase is in fact clay with a high gloss crystal glaze (roughly crushed glass and crystals mixed in with the usual finely crushed glass glaze medium). During firing - the glass and crystals melt and move around and fuse onto the clay surface. It's like having an alchemy oven! As to the the tool... I've always known it as a roulette gear - but steve's tool sounds much easier to remember :) maybe he invented it!

@Chris - that is a great looking vase! You could be right. It would have had to be added after firing though, or it would have burned off in the kiln and the plaster of paris would have expanded and shot off like mini missiles damaging anything else being fired at the same time :) The "cloth" would be more fragile than the rest of your vase in this case.

It could be clay added to the basic vase (before it had dried) with a course weave cloth pressed over the surface (and tied around the neck) to imprint the effect. The cloth would then be removed and the surface tidied up before firing. Nowadays we have paper clays which shrink less and can be added over the surface of an already dried pot - I think if made into a clay slip resembling the texture of wet plaster, a cloth could be dipped into it then placed in position, patched and smoothed with more slip and left to dry. The cloth would burn away, but the paper clay would remain. Unless it's a modern piece, it's unlikely to have been made by this method though.

The other option is surface carving... MY FAVOURITE!!! I LOVE CARVING!! In which case, they did a very very good job - and it would have taken absolutely ages - so they probably didn't and went for the cloth pressing shortcut instead :)

Sorry for the long post :)

May I say I didn't find many "laugh out loud" posts?

Paul, Paul, Paul... Didn't your mama ever tell you that "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"?!!!

Dis-honorable mention to Winterknight: the better interpretation of the Tom's action is that he checked the road for cars before allowing his harem (and yes, it is called that, Julie) to cross...

Dude! It is a caption. The picture is not supposed to be an accurate description of animal behavior. It is supposed to be something that makes people laugh, and I maintain that Winterknight's caption was, in fact, "laugh out loud" funny!

I am not particularly enamoured of this proposed new rule in the tool guessing game. If the winner doesn't automatically have to host the next stage, then we could get to a position where nobody bothers at all. All these type of threads, like the caption one means that if you want to participate, then if you win you carry on, that is the whole premise of it.

Likewise though, if people don't want to host the new tool, they might refrain from playing at all. I think there would be more participation without the winning pressure.

That was the problem. Nobody was playing anymore because nobody wanted to host the new one.

The question is why? It's just a game and most people who post there know how to upload a pic? Just my opinion...

But it does get harder to find new pics as time goes on, I do accept that.

I will certainly participate more now. I like the guessing part, but not the hunt for a new pic.
I am sure, that there are a few obscure tools around and this gives people a change of posting them without winning.

Just my two cents worth.
