When I joined the project, I had no idea that the forums existed. I was just going to allow SETI to run on my machine. If postings are causing you grief, avoid the forums and just leave BOINC running in the background. I do not fight fascists because I think I can win. I fight them because they are fascists. What, and lose out on some great belly laughs? I'm sure someone has installed a Seti webcam in my dining room as over the past month I've gotten some great pm's. Unfortunately, they've been viewed while having dinner. The most recent made me splutter my tea over a nice juicy thick gammon steak..... |

I think this discussion brings up an interesting point. We all have a beach we are willing to die on. This happens to be WN's. There is nothing wrong with taking a principled stand. Several years ago the management at the hospital where I work took a position that I felt was not in the best interest of some of the patients in my care. I objected verbally, but the policy remained. I objected in writing, but the policy remained. I then tendered my written resignation with a carefully crafted letter stating why I felt the particular policy was in violation of our hospital's mission statement. I explained that I was unable to continue working for an organization that violated its own mission statement. Suddenly everything changed. My manager made calls. My manager's manager made calls. I had drinks and dinner with a manager 3 levels above my current manager. I argued persuasively during that off site "meeting" (drank in extreme moderation...) and made sure that I was armed for that meeting with data that supported my stand. Guess what?!!! I got that policy changed and I will celebrate 25 years of employment with that hospital this coming February. One person can make a difference. WK, I am sad to see you go, but I completely understand if this issue is your particular "beach". |

Ah principals. It's nice to see that the world ain't dead yet. However, there are times that the 'beach' looks so warm and comfortable that one never leaves it. |

The ignore feature would work a lot better if: 1) Rather than hiding the post of someone filtered, but providing the option to un-hide it, just make completely invisible, period. Also, do so for responses that quote the invisible post. (Whether the quote is in the post, use this whenever the quote button was used, where it shows what message number was being responded to.) 2) Make threads created by someone filtered, making it completely invisible as well. Also, we have people who create threads for their vitriolic rants and raves, then proceed to be the only one posting in the thread. If a thread originator is the only posting in that thread for, say, 10 posts in a row, perhaps the thread should be auto-locked. Why should the S@H message boards be turned into niches for blogs? |

The ignore feature would work a lot better if: I would vote for 7 posts in a row. [/quote] Old James |

Perhaps a bit of an overhaul/review is required here, some thing that the seti heads, seniors and moderators could under-take. I'm not going looking for it, but there's a thread about feeding cats that has many posts by one member and they are only because he's keeping the thread going. Maybe the best option is to leave things the way they are and allow the mods to stomp on those who need stomping on. I do not fight fascists because I think I can win. Maybe I don't say thank you enough Donald, but I might miss the daily reminder to feed the Animals. There is Spam and there is SPAM. It is a fine line. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

Maybe I don't say thank you enough Donald, but I might miss the daily reminder to feed the Animals. Regarding the FreeKibbleKat thread, Thanks, Uli, Chris, and Robert for the kind words. I do seem to have inherited that one from Mark. When he went on time-out during the 1st iteration, I was one of several who were keeping it going until Mark returned, and there were occasional comments from others about the Trivia questions. Not so much any more. This thread is one of Mark's GOOD ones, and both the "banished user" and "7 consecutive posts" rules would have taken out that thread and the good it does. And requesting the Mods to unlock the Thread on a weekly basis seems an unneccesary pain in the rear. As KibbleKat II is now over 400 entries, I'm thinking about opening KibbleKat III under my own sponsorship, with some sort of acknowledgement to Mark, as we do with Beets and Rocky's. Auto-hiding threads started by "banished" members seems to me a meat-axe solution where a scalpel would suffice - does potentially as much harm as good. SOME of those threads were good ones, with wide participation and enjoyment. Remember when Clayton had all his threads hidden, we were having some real fun in a couple of them, and that went away. And there is the "What are you watching on YouTube today" threads that many of us have posted to, or followed the links and enjoyed. If they don't already have it, I favor giving the Mods the ability to hide whole threads as well as individual posts for unacceptable content, but I think auto-locking "banished user" threads and "X Number of consecutive posts by the same user" goes too far. Maybe I don't say thank you enough Donald, but I might miss the daily reminder to feed the Animals. Donald: I used to read and post in the Cafe quite a bit more. Not so much, these days. My "home" here, so to speak, is this Politics and Non-SETI Science fora. Thus, my suggestions were based on recent and ongoing trends in those parts of the message boards. I hadn't even looked at the Kibble thread, though I like cats and in fact "rescued" a feral kitten a year-and-a-half ago. (She's quietly looking out a window right now.) I seem to recall the auto-hiding of any threads started by banished users being tried at one point. If I am reading your response correctly, I take it you remember that happening as well? You may be right about an axe versus a scalpel. I don't know. So, though I see no comments from mods on these ideas at the moment (but we have seen a former mod, James, comment), then perhaps if it were by some chance to go forward, maybe the rule could apply to certain fora? Specifically: Science (non-SETI) Discussion of other Science Topics Politics Discussion of Political Topics A thread started and only posted in by one person is not discussion (unless they like the look of their own type or have multiple personalities). |

A long thread. I couldn't read all messages carefully. English isn't my first language. But, just my opinion .. Forum mods are members like you and me. They are not officially admins. For to make this clear, they changed 'forum moderators' to 'volunteer moderators' in past. They are not their whole life forum mods. Just a specific time. If you have probs with their decisions, if you write a message, left hand, there is an EMail address where you could write to all. I don't know if there is a chief (an officially admin) of the forum mods, maybe write to him if needed. I don't always agree with their decisions in past (in my cases), but it's not a big deal. In life there are much more important things. I don't care if the forum mods act other way I would do. I'm here for the SAH science. This is another pair shoes. I would never shut down my PC because of something here in the forum. BTW. If you see a thread of a troll, don't write in this thread. Just let him write, don't care about. Don't feed him. He will die of starvation. * Best regards! :-) * Philip J. Fry, team seti.international founder. * Optimize your PC for higher RAC. * SETI@home needs your help. * |

BTW. If you see a thread of a troll, don't write in this thread. That is about the best advice there is for handling many types of posters. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |
