Message 1656529 - Posted: 25 Mar 2015, 0:16:05 UTC - in response to Message 1652103.

update.

LHC restart: Short circuit slows preparations

The rebooted Large Hadron Collider is facing a delay of days or even weeks, after a short circuit was detected in one of its powerful electromagnets.

Following a two-year break, the LHC is getting ready to smash protons together once again - at new, higher energies.

Before the collisions begin, proton beams must travel safely around its 27km circumference in both directions.

Those full laps were expected to begin this week, but that plan will now be revised.

I had a short last night on my SUN WS,2008 vintage. I thought it could be the power supply, so I took it off and installed a brand new 500 W power supply on my shelves. Dead on arrival. Now I have to order a new one. Computers are useless without electricity.

Perhaps, a person's computer could be recharged via peddling -- similar to the
old-fashioned sewing-machines. Why not combine a work-out with something
even more productive?

The library in Hasselt has the peddling system! Quite ingenious.

I just ordered a new power supply using this laptop. The old power supply installed by SUN worked eight years. Hats off to SUN, now Oracle.

LHC is not starting yet because a small metal fragment is shorting it. This week they will try to vaporize the fragment by a local current. The best laid schemes of mice and men gang aft agley.

LHC restart: 'Experimental' current blast fixes glitch

The short circuit delaying the restart of the Large Hadron Collider has been fixed, after a blast of high current melted the metal particle responsible.

It is now likely that the LHC will see beams of protons racing around its 27km circumference early next week.

The massive machine's second run, after a two-year refit, had faced a delay of up to several weeks after the glitch was discovered ten days ago.

The high voltage tests yesterday looked fine. The main dipole magnet circuit of sector 34 now needs to be requalified for operation at 6.5 TeV-this should take around 2 days.Another couple of days are then required for final interlock tests with the machine fully available before we can go for beam. End of quotation.
