I don't usually spread panicky virus warnings, but this one sounds legitimate and scary.

(I'll post it in NC too, but not everyone who reads here also reads there.)

I'm not worried, but I'm used to dealing with such foolish attempts on My system...

Me neither. Who would open a FedEx or what ever notification, if you didn't order anything.

How true, but as PT Barnum is reputed to have said: There's a sucker born every second.

It's generally believed that PT Barnum in fact did not say that.

When you say "repute", it means "rumored" or "alleged". Use whatever synonym you wish, I was just letting you know that the allegations are likely false.

I already knew that it could be false, that's why I said what I said.

Message 1433078 - Posted: 25 Oct 2013, 7:40:18 UTC

A friend who I do occasional work for runs a small IT business.

One of his customers got this via an email, it looked like emails they do get.

When your accounts department gets hundreds of e-mails a day it can and did slip through.

It proceeded to encrypt EVERY document on every share this machine had access to. Which was a lot.

They were not recoverable. Of course my friend had instituted a back up system and nothing was lost but it took a while to find the machine and then clear it before the backup was restored.

Moral always have a SEPARATE backup.

And keep the backup off site as well. If your office burns down, no backup.

For extra safety, move your "my documents" folder to a separate drive. I have mine that way and also that drive is in a caddy where the key to lock it in also allows it to power up.

When not in use and surfing, it's powered down. System gets hijacked recover via WHS. job done.

I don't usually spread panicky virus warnings, but this one sounds legitimate and scary.

http://snopes.com/computer/virus/cryptolocker.asp

(I'll post it in NC too, but not everyone who reads here also reads there.)

The company I work for was a victim. Apparently, it got sent to someone at the company with the heading, "You have a New Voicemail from <someone they knew>".

Oh great. Our voice mail goes to email too. I personally listen to it on the phone, but most of our people listen to the email attachment.
