Message 1431590 - Posted: 21 Oct 2013, 20:35:43 UTC - in response to Message 1431543.

I have changed by boinc_users and boinc_admins groups to include 'Jerry, Everyone and Administrator' with no 's' on 'Adminstrator', no doubt an overkill. I rebooted after those changes.

After rebooting, I did not find the boinc Icon in the system tray therefore I used boincmgr /m in the command window so as to get boinc manager's dislay. I hit the reset button for S@H but did not reboot. S&H units are running but unknown if it's all doing OK.

The Everyone built-in security principal is likely overkill and should almost never be used in my professional opinion.

When you launch BOINCMGR, does it prompt for elevation? If not, can you force elevate to see if you still have write issues? I am, of course, assuming you've turned back on UAC, otherwise this test doesn't matter.

10/20/2013 8:14:06 PM | | CAL: ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 4600 series (R730) (CAL version 1.4.1734, 512MB, 480MB available, 960 GFLOPS peak)
10/20/2013 8:14:06 PM | | OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 4600 series (R730) (driver version CAL 1.4.1734, device version OpenCL 1.0 AMD-APP (937.2), 512MB, 480MB available, 960 GFLOPS peak)

Hold on, the AMD HD4600, although it is OpenCL 1.0 capable, doesn't it use a workgroup size of 128 and therefore isn't supported to run OpenCL tasks here at Seti? Or is that only when used in combination with the Lunatics optimized apps and then only the one for Astropulse, since it can't do MB v7?

OK, I removed the 'Everyone' from _users and _admins. I can see why Everyone in any security group would not be a good idea.
I haven't retried UAC yet. I'm kinda waiting to see if 'gpu tasks' are completing. Maybe I'll try it in a bit and let you know what the outcome is.

You're right on S@H v7 - here's a post by Claggy saying the 4600 can't run S@H v7 - I'd forgotten that.

The project sent him the open cl app and tasks for Astropulse after the gpu install, but they all errored out due to the write problem. May be able to run that without the Opt. Apps installation. But there's no AP available now except a few resends, and it looks to me like none for maybe 2 more days.

Edit: sure enough, when I say something, they start splitting new AP tasks. Sorry.....

Edit: and you've already picked up 3 so we'll see if that gpu and driver are okay.

Don't know why Scheduler timed out your tasks - may be related to your preference to suspend network when computer is busy - the outcome message waa "no reply". At least it's not holding you to daily limits.

I have UAC back on at the lowest level. Launching boincmgr did not prompt for elevation. At this point everything seems to be working OK. 5 Seti and 1 Astropulse tasks running.

Elevated the UAC level and things still appear to be OK.

I suspect that adding your user account to the boinc_admins security group resolved the write issues you were experiencing.

I also suspect that BOINC Manager is not designed to prompt for elevation and may require manual elevation or explicit "Run as administrator" in the compatibility settings - however - I don't think any of this is necessary now that it appears you've added the correct user accounts to the boinc_admins group.

I concur however yesterday was my first look at the _admins group and I found that 'Jerry' and 'Administrators' were already included in this group. Therefore, I'm still confused why the 'writes' wouldn't work a couple days ago but they do now??? Oh well, things seem to be working OK at this point. THANKS for your assistance!

The only thing that makes sense is if you hadn't rebooted since they were added to that group, then permissions don't take effect until a log off / log on.

If you had already rebooted at some time, then I would start looking over the security permissions on the folders themselves. This is unlikely though since it seems to be working now... so back to... it must have been a lack of authenticating the permissions.

So far, looks like we were both wrong, I'm happy to claim. :-)
