Hello, again...

Now I tried this:

remove Nvidia:
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*

wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/319.17/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-319.17.run
sudo chmod 0755 *.run
sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-319.17.run

But gave this error:

ERROR: this .run file is intended for the
Linux-x86_64 platform, but you appear to be
running on Linux-x86. Aborting installation.

Anybode, please help o)

Hi,

I tried this last thing, and it went so much better, because of the right 32bit, yes, but now the letters on the screen is normal!

32bit:
wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/331.38/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-331.38.run
sudo chmod 0755 *.run
sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-331.38.run

But! Still not showing the GPU in the gpu field:

Hi Guy ;)

Thanks for your reply! I really need some help now.

Earlier on this morning I tried several things. I managed to f... everything up ad well. The problem is, that I'm running a Ubuntu Server 12.04 edition. No graphical interface. It's all terminal. So, a lot of the problem solving sites I've been reading, is regarding the Ubuntu 12.04 desktop edition.

After messing things up I managed to repair the driver by removing all nvidia stuff with the "apt-get purge nvidia*" command and then I did this

wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/331.38/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-331.38.run
sudo chmod 0755 *.run
sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-331.38.run

I'm used to work in the shell, so what I need is the right commands and if possible, maybe a little guide in steps, like you did in this, your post. I know it's easy to say "all I need...." when it's a different system. But it's because I don't know very much about the "graphical/levels" you all are talking about. I remember to have used a similar command once, but this was in a Ubuntu Linux Desktop Edition..

I'm very greatful for all the help I can get, so if you can do more for me, it will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Guy,

Thanks for your post.

I'm not good enough, so I don't know if Ubuntu Server 12.04 has a function like "Yum", sorry.

Important:
Is your Linux version a server edition? The reason I ask is this:
15. reboot back in graphical mode

Do I really have ti begin installing a graphical interface, to install/setup a driver for Ubuntu Server 12.04 ??

I already tried this:

32bit:
$ wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/331.38/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-331.38.run
$ chmod 0755 *.run
$ ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-331.38.run

There was a few questions on screen, which I was unsure about. 1 was "DKMS", and I simply didn't know what to answer, so I tried both.
It reinstalled the driver so that the screen looked normal after all my attempts on installing and setting up this GPU for BOINC. But it didn't make the GPU/GeForce GT610 appear on "http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/hosts_user.php"

I'm not having any issues connecting with boinc manager. Some of my other BOINC servers I modified for use with passwords, other ports, AndroBOINC etc. So this is not an issue.
Please notice, that I NEVER have had a computer where the GPU was accepted by BOINC. All my other BOINC Servers is old machines or pretty new actually, but old technology. So this is the first time I'm trying to set up a GPU for use in BOINC.
But I know about the preferences. These are setup correctly. All allow both Nvidia and ATI. Some places are set to only 20% of the GPU, but this is a standard setting. So this is not the reason, I think. Or hope that is ;)

Soon I will start crying my eyes out :(

Hi Guy,

Ahhh.. apt-get, I see! Well, apt-get I use every day! Theres another just like it "aptitude" which in the Ubuntu world is used just as much. But apt-get is the one I use the most.

Nvidia needs X!? Even though it's a non-graphical environment? Well, as you know, I'm still learning about Linux. I will look at the link now.

The reason I use Ubuntu Server, is because it's much faster, much easier to setup, when we are talking number crunching. I'm bulding a RACK mounted server park, only for the BOINC software (SETI/Asteroid). I started out with 5-6 P4 computers, RACK mounted, and if you want performance from those "old guys" you just need to choose Linux. Linux performs just great with these older systems. This is the primary reason. But it was also because of my business. I'm working with data recovery, and for the next 3 years I'm studying at DTU as well(the Danish MIT, you can call it), and therefore I wanted to learn about Linux. But I have always have a general interest in Linux. Because of the fact that Linux does not need new hardware every second year!

Regarding BOINC, you can read about here. Worldwide community which joins and looks for little green men or dangerously large stones up in the sky ;) (and much more, soling cancer, solving Mathematical questions, etc. etc.)

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/

I'll see, if I can get any brighter reading the site you shown me ;9

Hi Guy,

I installed the 64bit version Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 and I'm going through your list now. Have been reading about CUDA and gcc. Lets see what happens.

Can't find the command to/can't find the file:

Edit /etc/sysconfig/grub and add "rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau" to the end
Can't find it, can it be in another folder/directory? Could it be this file? /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf
Can it be /etc/default/grub ??? Here's a view of the content in the file:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=2
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

Tried it, but I think theres just to many errors now:
root@mycomputer: grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
No command 'grub2-mkconfig' found, did you mean:
 Command 'grub-mkconfig' from package 'grub-common' (main)
grub2-mkconfig: command not found

root@mycomputer:/home/drhadmin# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
/usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig: 37: /etc/default/grub: rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau: not found

removed xorg-x11-drv-nouveau (must remove nouveau because it interferes with the nvidia driver)
Needs the command for ubuntu! But this is maybe it: "apt-get –purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau"

OK GUY! YOU DID IT!!!

It works g.. d... it !!! My g.. . It all went wrong, but some of the things we did, made it possible to install the driver. And I was asked if I wanted the driver program to disable nouveau! And then I could reboot and install proberly, and now I can se it under BOINC/GNU preferences online:

GPU:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 (2047MB) OpenCL: 1.01

OK Guy, we need to work out a todo, please help me find out, what I did wrong and what I did right! Because I have to install several BOINC servers! The screen attached to the server looks funny, I can see the terminal text, but then theres some graphical error on the screen. 1/6 of the screen is colored like the rainbow ;)

Well, Guy, are you up for it? Will you help me do the ToDo? There's 1000+ people on the net who needs this easy todo..

I will insert the todo I made so far, and the you can see what happened in my post beneath:

Hi,

Ok, but then it's these 3 we/I need to figure out how to do in ubuntu server 12.04.4:
9. #vi /etc/sysconfig/grub (or whatever editor you're familiar with) and add 'rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau' to the end
10. #grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg (to pick up the above changes)
11. removed xorg-x11-drv-nouveau (must remove nouveau because it interferes with the nvidia driver)

About the graphical part, so yes, its not a nice screen to look at. But it worked, GPU was enabled in BOINC. But I would like to do it properly! Also a function from lm-sensors stopped working and some guys think its because of missing xserver or something like that. Maybe the function, which shows the temp of the GPU will reappear if we fix those 3 issues above ;)

Can you help me with these 3 issues from your list?
I'll get on with the reading. :)

>"vi" is one of the original text editors for Unix/Linux.

yes, that's true. but vi and other CLI editors, as so as pure CLI itself not that comfortably for me, as mc ( midnight commander).
maybe it is due my young years, when i use ms-dos with Norton Commander :)
in any way, especially for novice, i recommend install ( if distro do not include it by default) an midnight commander - it is very handy tools for everyday work in console, also for configfiles view and edit....

P.S what sort of problems introduce nvidia installer disabling nouveau driver via blacklist it in ?modprobe?
i always do work for that disabling to nvidia installer, and do not find problems from that...?

Hi Bil,

Regarding the editors. I'm only using terminal/Putty to "remotely" control my RACK mounted computers. So no graphical interface does it for me. Well, maybe if it has SSH and can be run from a windows7 desktop!?

Regarding the issue on the Nvidia driver killing the nouveau, I have to let Mr. Guy answer. I'm not good enough yet. You can see how I struggled getting the GPU to work.

Thanks for the interest in the project ;)

Hi Guy,

Thanks.. Great info!!!

I'm sorry about the newbie questions, but you are really teaching me stuff!

I use VI as well, and normally I change from DASH to BASH on my servers. Can't remember why, it has to do with some control panel stuff on some of my web-servers if I remember correctly. It wouldn't work properly if I use the standard DASH mode of the shell.
VI can be uses in Putty, no problem.. Its just like sitting in front of the server screen. It's great!

I found this, maybe this can solve the problem regarding those 3 lines..
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2063025

The problem is, that almost all the posts regarding this matter "Nvidia/Ubuntu 12.04" is about the desktop version. And they always say, "..get out of X, you do that by etc. etc.." But I use Ubuntu Server and are always in "terminal mode" or am I? Am I still in X even though I'm running the server edition and all is done in the shell? This would help me a lot!

Hi Guy,

I just finished this, I don't know if it will work. It's only for a clean/new installation of Ubuntu Server!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UBUNTU SERVER 12.04.4 64BIT - DRIVER INSTALLATION NVIDIA GEFORCE GT610 - BOINC & GPU

LINK: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2063025

TODO ON A CLEAN INSTALLATION OF UBUNTU SERVER 12.04.4:

0. Take sudo rights
# sudo su

1. Make sure "gcc" is installed by checking version "gcc --version". Install "gcc"
# gcc --version
# apt-get install gcc

2. Reboot
# reboot

3. Download newest/best Linux Nvidia driver!? e.g."NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.38.run" from nvidia.com
# wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/331.38/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.38.run
# chmod 0755 *.run
or
# chmod + x NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.38.run

4. Blacklist nouveau and other nvidia modules. Edit "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf" and add "blacklist nouveau" etc. to the bottom.

# vi /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

blacklist vga16fb
blacklist nouveau
blacklist rivafb
blacklist nvidiafb
blacklist rivat

5. Remove nouveau to avoid conflicts
# apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

6. Reboot
# reboot

7. Take sudo rights
# sudo su

8. Install the downloaded Nvidia driver
# ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.38.run

Question. I saw something about boinc_64 in your todo! Is there a 64 bit version of boinc? I install the boinc-client only, because it's a server/shell mode always.

OMG, bubuntu looks like very complicated thing.
do you use that machines for BOINC only, or boinc is only a spare project on them?
if first thing - why you not use a slackware - very simple and good linux distro?
also not understand, why on home desktop you us MS OS and putty - there also be a great thing to install slackware :D
i personally fully switch to linux ( including all desktops and netbooks in home) about a 7 or 8 years ago, and do not regret it any second.

about a putty itself - via putty you do terminal session via ssh. as so you can run vi, vim,ed, pico, or what you want. or, if you are as lazy as i, but do not want x server - then you can use mc too.

for running boinc on nvidia GPU, as i know, you do not neet X server running. ATI/AMD is another story - i cannot get GPU recognize in boinc until i not start X server on ATI HD4350.
but nvidia is another story -far better than ati in drivers and support...

OMG, bubuntu looks like very complicated thing.
do you use that machines for BOINC only, or boinc is only a spare project on them?

I'm only using these servers for BOINC, nothing else. And there will be 5 of these BOINC servers, when I found the right combination of hardware.

why you not use a slackware - very simple and good linux distro?

Sorry, I'm not that good at Linux yet, so I don't know what "slackware" or "distro" is, sorry. o)

why on home desktop you us MS OS and putty - there also be a great thing to install slackware :D
i personally fully switch to linux ( including all desktops and netbooks in home) about a 7 or 8 years ago, and do not regret it any second.

OK, I have used Ubuntu 12.04.2 Desktop for about a year, to learn about the OS environment. The only reason I switched, is because I have a webshop, and for this I need some programs I know. This is Photoshop and CorelDraw. I tried using Inkscape a long time, but I had to give in, and change. This is the only windows desktop I use. But, I also use windows 7 on this desktop, because I had to learn about windows 7 as well. I have been doing Data Recovery for 13 years, which demands sudden knowledge about the different OS'.
For about 3 more years, I'm studying at DTU, (danish Technological University) and here I use a little netbook with Ubuntu minimal install and LXDE.
When I have learned to use a good linux program which does the same as photoshop, I will drop the windows desktop! You can count on that. I don't like the game going on between INTEL factory and Microsoft Software. This is exactly the reaon why I use Linux on all my "old" servers! My webservers, my webshop etc all run on Linux! I'm a fan, a HUGE fan!

about a putty itself - via putty you do terminal session via ssh. as so you can run vi, vim,ed, pico, or what you want. or, if you are as lazy as i, but do not want x server - then you can use mc too.

I know putty. I use it all the time, via ssh. I prefer controlling my servers via putty. I don't know what you mean with "...if you are as lazy as i, but do not want x server - then you can use mc too..". Please explain, because I really need to be done with this problem Ubuntu Server/Nvidia/GPU/BOINC!

for running boinc on nvidia GPU, as i know, you do not neet X server running. ATI/AMD is another story - i cannot get GPU recognize in boinc until i not start X server on ATI HD4350.
but nvidia is another story -far better than ati in drivers and support...

No, I think it's the same here! I think it's X-server which is the problem for me as well. I'm doing a Ubuntu Linux BOINC Server as you well know, and this is the problem, I'm pretty sure! Isn't "nouveau" some part of X-server? And again, I'm sorry for asking, have only used Linux this way for a little more than a year!
