Why does BoincMgr REQUIRE that it be started under Administrator privileges and how may I change that so that it will start smoothly and without operator intervention from the START menu (Win7).

Probably you have to uninstall/reinstall BOINC with 'Allow all users on this computer to control BOINC' selected:

Hi BilBg and thanks for the suggestion. However, that did not prevent invocation with administrator authority.

Does anyone know how to kill the tag for required administrator authority appended to a link or other program invocation.

BOINC 7.0.64 (x86) is installed on W7.

Thanks,

That there is why Windows UAC gives the warning, you trying to start BOINC Manager from All Programs->Startup.

BOINC Manager has a registry entry through which it can be started. In BOINC Manager do Tools->Options->Check "Run Manager at login?".
You'll have to do this once for every account that is allowed to control BOINC through BOINC Manager.

By default, BOINC is installed in C:\Program Files (for 32bit and 64bit installs) or C:\Program Files(x86) (for 32bit BOINC on 64bit OS). This location only allows for Administrators to have Full Control security permissions as per Microsoft's Best Practices. The local Users security group only has Read and Read+Execute. Therefore when BOINC Manager starts up and attempts to write to this location, it immediately triggers Windows' UAC prompt.

To allow BOINC to startup without receiving a UAC prompt, go to your BOINC program folder and locate BOINCMGR.EXE, right-click on it and then click Properties, then click on the Security Tab. Click the Edit button, then click the Add... button. In the "Select Users, Computers, Service Accounts, or Groups" dialog box, type in Authenticated Users, then press OK.

Make sure Authenticated Users is selected in the Permissions tab, then select Full Control. Checking the box for Full Control will automatically populate the Modify, Read&Execute, Read, and Write boxes. Click OK to close the Permissions box, then click OK to close the Properties box.

You may need to do the same for BOINC.EXE. Once Authenticated Users has Full Control to launch these two applications, you should no longer receive UAC prompts.

Probably easier will be to install BOINC not in Program Files but somewhere else, e.g. in:
C:\Programs.Jim
